Recommendation for Wide Angle Lens for Landscape Photography

Hey guys, anyone have a good suggestion for a lens? I have a Canon EOS 40D. I plan on using it to shoot landscapes as reference for paintings. I mostly plan on shooting during the afternoon, and early evening. I think color fidelity and detail are the most important factors in the picture to me. Any suggestions?
