Focal Plane - Klips' Idea Log

In an effort to collect my photos together a bit more (and somewhere outside the photojournalism forum) I've started this. This will really be for most things that I shoot which have an experimental aspect for me, either something I'm unfamiliar with or uncomfortable doing.

Coping Mechanisms

Taken after dark, using a 1/2 CTO gel to warm up the flash. If you thought it was afternoon, then my job is done

Six six six

Paws

I do *so* little post processing to my photos, that the effort I went to with this one was rather epic for me. Exposure correction, colour correction, contrast optimising, NR, vignetting, exposure painting, highlight hue toning, the works

Weariness

I have an obsession with sharpness, so I'm trying out having shots partially or fully blurred to see if they still resonate with the same (or a different) message as the focused ones, or if it's just lost and looks crud. I'm decided, but tell me what you think.

Please note: HARSH CRITIQUES ARE DESIRED!!!! I've been shooting for a while now and my ego is well protected, so any criticisms and areas for improvement you want to give will be really appreciated!

See you back here soon.

Yepp I thought it was afternoon in "Coping Mechanisms" you fooled me. Strobist freak.... Kinda wish the laptop wasn't cut off though.

For Six six six, it's a bit overexposed. I normally use a negative exposure compensation number, an aperture between 8-12, shutter speed of about 80-100 and an ISO of 100 or 200. Also, my custom white balance produces slightly dull whites (in some cases) with full detail that way I can brighten them up in PS if the lighting conditions are too harsh to begin with. Most of the time I don't have to do this in very sunny conditions. Oh, sometimes I use an old analog flash to brighten up the shadow areas, but since you're a strobist freak it should be no problem. Usually a setup up like the one above will give you no overexposure, but it's always fun to play around.

I like the diptych setup in "Weariness" For online display, I think it's better to present them in this way because most of the time a blurry picture is highly conceptual and many people may not get it at first glance.

Jofx: Thanks mate, it's weird for me to use muted colours, so having an update full of them is really strange

Rose: Ahhh, I should pull down that exposure a bit eh, although it was too bright to use a shutter that slow. Ah well, next time!

This one was a rushed job, go see my flickr for a full explanation if you want it:

Thanks Rose, I spent a fair while playing with curves to get a nice tonal range so it's good to see it's appreciated.

I like the last one. Maybe a bit too bright in the highlights of the shirt.
