The Photo Challenge : ABSTRACT ...dead line february 3

V'debr 'Allukard:
«And spake Alucard:»

The rules:

1. Only one picture per contestant.

2. No voting for your own picture.

3. No previously used material. All photos must be fresh, shot for this challenge, and never displayed on any gallery / thread.

4. The winner of the last poll will set the next topic; if the same person stands as the winner two times in a row, he or she must choose another user to present the next topic.

5. In the event of a tie in the polls, the person who created the challenge casts the tie breaking vote.

6. Enhancements of the picture are allowed in terms of colour management, curves, levels, crop, sharpening, etc. Adding or removing elements in the photo, brushed enhancements, or anything that diverts into photo manipulation territory will not be accepted.

7. The challenge starts when the challenge thread is opened. It is open for new entries for 14 days, after which the vote poll is opened by the challenge starter. If (s)he fails to do so, anyone is free to open the voting thread. The voting thread should have all the entries in it and have public voting to prevent cheating.

8. The voting will go on for 2 days, then the winner (or other person assigned to start a new challenge, see rule 4 and 5) starts a new thread named "The Photo Challenge - [name]", where [name] indicates the topic of the new challenge. If he fails to do so within the day the poll ends, the next person in the poll may do so.

10. Pictures should have a title to make them easy to identify, however this is optional.

11. Do not attach your entry to the thread, instead use an external host such as photobucket.com or imageshack.us, to allow hotlinking from the voting thread.

I don't mean to be hatin', nor do I mean to be threadjackin', I'd just like to get this underway again. So no disrespect to Alucard, but dammit, don't forget about the good stuff, guys! Uhm, yeah... post your photos and whatnot. Crazy mad props to Alucard for the challenge topic, it got people interested again.

I'm modifying my entry to this photograph, because i think this one is more suited to the topic:

BTW this is virtually straight out of the camera. I cleaned off a little sensor dust and i think upped the saturation by +3 or something heh.

I'm really liking the pictures here everyone! I love abstract photography quite a lot.

Claude's picture isnt here yet, but i think its awesome and thus far it gets my vote! I love the colour and feel of the photograph.

Twisted Woods

Shot during midday, coastal location with a Nikon D50.

I did play with the Hue/Sat sliders via Photoshop to remove unwanted color data.

Here's to hoping workloads and deadlines allow me become more active around here.

heeeyyyy... everything got all black and white all of a sudden...
*raises left eyebrow*

did i come to the right forum?
hehe

alucard, great image. im hoping there wasn't any photoshop involved, that would be an awesome multiple exposure if done with the camera only.
well, here's mine.
100% un-edited in PS... actually, i DID add the border in photoshop, does that count?
hehe, just kidding.

I was going for abstract. I'll post a pic of what it was when the contest is over. You will have to suffer until then heh.

Danube.

I took it just as a little test, 'I wonder if I can pull off something abstract?' and wahay, now a chance to actually show it!
Not the greatest in the World, but it wouldn't be in the spirit of things to not include it in the challenge.

I have to say, my personal favourite so far has to be Iliada - Reflection.

Here's mine... I changed it to b&w and then added a little bit of colour in... I'm never sure quite where the lines are drawn as far as editing in the challenge, but anyway, here it is:

I think we needed a definition of abstract... I see a mixture of abstract, surreal, landscapes and still-life.

Well, really abstract is anything that you can't tell what it portrays. If I draw a hall with some stairs - not abstract, if I use a rough copy of the hall and stairs keeping maybe blue of the stairs and red of the hall, thus making them contrast (and so have some artistic value), yet at the same time preventing the viewer from seeing the hall and stairs themselves then it's abstract.

So if there's no 'concrete' object in the image it is abstract. My original idea was to just play about with red and blue, such items as clothing, but then I thought 'nah, might as well post that one I took on the Danube, which I tried to make at least a tiny bit abstract.' - the water's not abstract, but the colours are. So maybe we need to stretch 'abstract' for this challenge, or just not vote for the ones you don't think are abstract.

Well, Rose, that's a good point actually.
I just looked up some definitions and I think this one sums it up quite well -

"3. arts nonrepresentational: not aiming to depict an object but composed with the focus on internal structure and form"

- then again this definition also implies that there are several possible approaches to the topic "abstract" - focussing on a structure/form and not that topic itself - that goal can be reached with landscape, stills etc. -
well, I might be missing something. Would be great to hear more thoughts about that.

@Nike: Yeah, I was just a bit confused. Some I definitely consider abstract, a couple are borderline for me and others are a bit off.

@Rob: That's a lot of stretching. They're all nice photos, I just feel bad not considering some of them for my vote in the future. However, it is themed "Abstract," so I guess I shouldn't feel too bad. Oh well.

While I'm complaining I need to take my entry. X_X
