depends on your budget for the lens

the best imo (I have one) is the 17-55 f2.8 IS lens

that's wide angle, though do you want to go ultra wide angle?

for fisheye you have a few options there is a cheapy 8mm fisheye though I don't think it has autofocus (iirc 8mm will give you a full circular image on a cropped sensor like the xti)

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...splay.php?f=33

lots of info there about lenses for canon, there is a picture archive as well if you want to see photos people took with them

wide angle just means you can fit more of what you see into the picture (they have a low focal length)

picture paints a thousand words as they say:

below 17mm is classed as ultra wide angle usually, above that is wide angle

then your more standard focal lengths before moving onto telephoto

so a wide angle will be of more use for indoor shots where you can't move back far enough to fit more in the frame and for landscapes (though you can use pretty much any lens for landscapes, depends on what in the landscape you want in there)

the other thing with wide angle is when you get close up to something in the foreground you can make it look more extreme and fit more in the background behind it

the last one shows this distortion effect on people, the first has the same thing but obviously the effect looks less normal for portraiture photos

if you check the exif of that picture you can see that photo was taken at a focal length of 10mm

personally I would get the tokina 11-16 f2.8 compared to the canon 10-22, though its swings and roundabouts

of course those are both ultra wide angle lenses and have a more specific application compared to 17-xx type lenses

you should be covered by the more common walk around range with the kit lens already though

rather than debate it all here, I suggest checking out this thread:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=578398

I don't own either, decided against it for now, lack of money and there are only so many lenses you can carry at a time ;]

would have thought any decent sharp lens with the relevant focal length would be good enough to do that

classic portrait lens would be from 85mm to 135mm a prime would usually be a bit sharper

as you can see it is very easy to spend a lot of money buying lenses ;]
