Makes me feel that it's a load of bull.

I'm an anthropology student and the Maya had a new year celebration a bit like us. Key difference was that it did not take place every year, it took place when the two parts of their rotational calendar lined up. Dec. 21, 2012 just happens to be the next date.

It's called the New Fire Ceremony. In an effort to prevent calamities, every single fire was put out and a new one was lit on a sacrifice. Each town and city would then relight their fires from this new fire. Pottery was also smashed as well as having towns and cities being rebuilt.

However, given the state of things today, I wouldn't be surprised if something bad happened around that time. We just have to wait it out and see what happens; like the Y2K bug hype.

It's an interesting topic. From what I know, nothing was ever found about what they said would happen at this date, some say it won't be the end, but the 'age of aquarius' where everyone will be at peace, something like that. There have been many domesday theories that have passed and obviously were not true, this is only a popular one because it is soon, and the I hear the Maya's have accurately predicted every lunar and solar eclipse to this day, amongst other things...

OK, now i'm scared...

Besides, the Maya's didn't predict I was half an hour away from my toilet flooding, so we must be safe.
