I like the out in the rain idea but it's not entirely fair if people don't get rain the entire time the competition is going so it would be a bit more difficult...

i dont have any off the top of my head but i think it would be fun to do more technique type challenges. involving lighting or dof or shutter speed or something along those lines.

that would basically lead me to mentioning the workshops, but frankly those have not been much of a success... do people have an opinion on that?

i liked the workshops. they were going on when i was really really busy with school and such but now i have time lol.
if i remember correctly there were a couple workshops that were object/theme based and not technique. we could do it so all technique type ideas are for the workshops and then just do themes like we do now for the challenges?
i dunno if others are interested in that tho.

the workshops...
there was a topic, usually it had to do with techniques..i know we did macro and i think we've done a few with lighting.
and yer supposed to take 5 photos( i think )of the same subject throughout the 3 weeks and get feedback and critique on them.
i think that was the overall idea of it, there was probably other small rules i dont remember.

some topic suggestions. Well, I thought long with the one-or two ord topics it would be nice to have some topics that are about creating certain atmospheres. The title of the challenge should be the title of the image, no further explanation, the images should carry that mood. At the same time, this would be very open, cause I think there are countless different options to reach the goal, from abstract to concrete, from portrait to landscape, whatever.
Just an idea

one velvet morning

daydreamer

when it's all over we still have to clean up

To the above. I think light is a great idea, however it needs to be ALOT more specific. photography is sculpting with light so if its just light in general then anything goes and you cant judge it.

ex of a good one may be: Study of night or dark photography using one single light source. no flash. practice using long exposure times to create the right mood.

Tools: a place to set the camera (tripod etc.) and one light source ie flashlight. strobe. or one open window(cant have the actual window in the pic bc that may show multiple sources) anything that has a single direction of light. That could be fun!
What do you think?

Also, Why the heck dont we have a weekly project, this is interesting and all but unless there are new things for certain ppl then the place dies. take one of these tons of suggestions and lets do something! PLEASE!!!

a few

Wow - topics can be anything. One way some folks I know bust out of a rut is to put a whole bunch of words in a hat, some descriptive, some content, some meaning/feeling, whatever. Then they draw a few out out. They might get blue, mouse, and rage. Those words dictate the image, whatever that produces. But, for some simple, straight forward ideas:

One light (or 2 or 3)
silhouette
backlight
side light
midday (a monster, but necessity is the mother of invention)
hope
food
relationship
athleticism
plants
uniforms
high contrast
low key
high key
self portrait
work
motion
dip/triptych
fear
darkness
from above or below
death and dying
tension
flexion
wealth
poverty
tenderness
callousness

It is limitless - just look at your bookshelf!
