First of all, good topic. Now for crits.
@Asadex: Too blurry and not sharp enough to satisfy my eyes. I think a close up of the different glass shards would have done the job perfectly. Also your choice of Black and white would have worked better if there were more contrasting lighting levels.

@Alucard: Perhaps my favorite photo. I love the almost warfare-like approach.. I am reminded of "Behind Enemy Lines" and "Call of Duty 4".. hah.. Both use the shaking trail to provide a very stunning effect. The only reason i might not vote for this photo is because it doesn't really strike me as an abstract subject/photo. Rotten luck, coulda won some other competition.

@a/z- not much to say. I would consider this photo more suitable for the topic as a painting than as a photo. But that's my personal opinion. It reminds me of some of the minimalistic work by Andy Warhol..

@Iliada: Well, i HAVE seen this concept quite often before.. it works.. but I am not finding the topic very captivating. Truly abstract, but not very attractive. Maybe some simplicity would help?

@Shade Of Dawn: Very Abstract, looks like curtains or soft lace stretched over the sky.. Quite poetic. I dig.

@Calzgal: How bout some simplicity? I don't really know what to be looking at. -Messy

@Complete2: I don't quite like the yellow color tone on this one. The Net is cool, not very abstract. DOF is quite shallow and not very gradual leaving half of the image completely blurred.. Maybe a gradual DOF? Different coloring?

@Grumbledook: No idea what to make of this. But there's definately something quite lacking about this one.

@Rhynome: Motion Blur? I mean if its intended that way.. great.. but its annoying to get past that blue and yellow blur. I dunno, difficult to say what's bothering me about it. Sorry can't be more informative.

@Someone: Cool concept.. Id have loved to see things crisp. The color also works out quite nice.

@Nike: Way too conventional for my taste.. and buddy, watch out for that camera softness.. Disturbing! :|

@Gentile: Ooh i know what this is.. Why's it so rumpled up?! Like i said to other contestants.. Simplicity is vital! Maybe sort out the hairs a bit.

@Kurdt: Blurry. Sorry.. Dang what a shame!
Also not a big fan of the colors.. Of all colors..why pink? It's a gas mask!

@Purplerose: You have won my heart. Very conventional i must say, but quite a delight to look at anyway. LOVE those leading lines, the choice of black and white fulfills the purpose quite well.

@ME: Great stuff buddy! :P
Naww, this is really lives up to its title: Holy Relic. I found these deep into Islamic "Old Cairo" territory. The inscribed language is the ancient Arabic form written Islamic style probably during the Turkish and Ottoman invasion of Egypt accompanied by all the decorative patterns that are associated with pronounciation as well as various plants and icons to fit with the overall look.
I think dating a few hundred years ago. Can't tell. But the people living there said it was incredibly old. Enjoy!

thx for all the crits claude

I must say I agree with you that something is lacking with mine, I had the same thought, though can't quite pinpoint it. Have to put a better effort out for the next one.

Nice photos everyone.

@Asadex: Nice capture of details.

@Alucard: Nice surreal photo. I think it could use a bit more contrast though.

@a/z: Nice minimalist feel. I think some play with cropping and rotation would help though.

@Iliada: I see these all the time on flickr and I still love them. Great job. You got my vote!

@ShadeofDawn: Nice colors. The only thing that's keeping me from calling it abstract is the recognizable mountain/hill. I think some play on just the sky only or the sky reflected in something would be a bit more on the abstract side.

@calzgal: I like the textures and the colors. have you tried cropping off sections of the photo to create a diptych/triptych setup.

@complete2: Pretty nice. I think you should try playing around with cropping more or a different angle to push that abstract feel. Right now, I can still kinda tell what it is. (Curtain, dress or tablecloth?)

@Grumbledook: Nice mood. I love the orange. Could use a bit more contrast though.

@Rhynome: Really nice reflections. To add on about the blur, when you crop a bit off the top, it doesn't look blurry anymore, well not to me at least.

Close second!

@someone: Very cool. A necklace? Anyways, could use a bit more contrast. Also, could help to try out some different angles/compositions. I rather like the blob-like appearance it has.

@Nike: Nice entry change. Could be a bit sharper though, but it is sharper than your previous entry,

@Gentile: Really nice entry change for you too. Is it one of those pom-pom thingies on the top of winter hats, or one of those rubbery toys with the little tentacles that make it look like a pom-pom? Only nit-pick is that the strand cutting across the top right corner could be cropped out.

@Kurdt: Nice photo. I think another angle would make it a bit more abstract though. I like the painterly feel it has.

@Claude: Nice tones. I think a close-up of the inscriptions would push it more into the realm of abstract though.

Hehe. You can't guess what it is :P I would have picked strands out but my subject was very...stiff. Haha. Guess again!

Hmm... plushie? Teddy bear?

If those aren't close... another clue? lol

Edit: Plushies aren't very stiff at all.... Umm, twigs or hay? I'm going crazy here.

Looks like the brush cleaner we have at home for the bathroom. It also looks like those brushes people use when they shower/bathe.

the only time i do that is if im shooting with my D50 with black/white in mind. then i'll desaturate the images in PS since i cant shoot black/white.
sooo, different colors/cropping, not gonna happen. but i appreaciate the comments.

So Iliada or The Rose making the next challenge?
Or have I interpreted the rules a little wrong and it's tomorrow?

Hmm, I think it's tomorrow, the poll may have been set too long though (but it was during a forum move). If no one breaks the tie, Iliada can open the next challenge (unless you really don't want to ).

Wow, decision making vote (for now anyway). My top three were:

1) purplerose
2) complete2
3) someone

Awesome stuff, great to see such a big turnout for the challenge. A lot of them to me weren't 'abstract' but I'm sure that will ahve already been covered.

i was thinking that after each challenge the Poll thread should be deleted every time so that it wold not get confusing over here.
so please someone with absolute power delete this one when the new Topic is set.

sorry I set the poll time to long. it's my first time :P

oh, and...congrats to rose.
i think we all agree that she should start the new challenge.

Thanx guys, I'll open the new challenge in a bit.

I guess I'll open the new winners thread like we had in the last forum and I'll put Iliada and me down as a tie since an extra vote came in. Yay!

Edit: I'll lock the poll and entry threads instead of deleting them.
