We are in the middle of uploading the featured photgraphers galleries for the site here and thought we could at least open up the boards a bit.

The old photography forums on ca had a ton of great talent and good things happening. So much so that we have built a new forums and home for the photographers in the creative community.

The old forums are now archived here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=58

We will be organizing the old threads into this new forums as time goes on.

Please feel free to share your work and ideas and continue to do what you all do. This place would not be here, if not for you.

First, may I have the sad honour of having the legendary second post. Thank you, thank you, i'll take autographs later.

Now, as for the site, hooray! It's about time we had our own dedicated photography forum, bravo to the mods for creating one :)

With the different sections there will be a lot more room for the photo forum to grow. The grey background is prefect for viewing photos, I'm going to explore the rest of the forum now, it's looking great! Thank you conceptart!

Edit: Would it be possible to have a personal photo threads section? Sort of like the sketchbooks section.

Good thinking Jason. I think what Morbid was referring to though is more like the Sketchbook section over at CA, where we can have our own personal threads. The current sections are good, but obviously many photographers work changes as they progress and therefore would change category, if that makes sense.

wow. I new things were happening for a wile now. But this color sceem is great, its going to work really well with the photos

thanks for every one's hard work on the new layout of the forum

just a few quick questions. Will are profials be ported over from the old forum? or are we going to be starting afresh?
i worked hard to get well over 1000 posts on the forum!

once again
Great work

Now that I think about it maybe it's better without one. Because that would make it a lot like in the old forum where you have your own thread with all your work, instead of putting it in the different categories.
The old threads would get very heavy to load with maybe 50 photos on one page. And people don't comment much when there's so much work in one place. Better with just one or a few photos to discuss in a thread perhaps?

everyones account SHOULD be ported over, but since this is a separate forum we are not transferring post counts.

Good thinking :)

As for the post count transferral, I personally would like a fresh start. A new forum, a new start. But I can definately understand how annoyed dedicated posters would be when they loose their count...

ok then, last question of the night. I know you chaps are still working on the forum and there is a lot of tweaking to do yet......

What about the admin status of me, legab, umm there were some others as well

cheers

If we are going the route of no personal threads, and more category based threads, what about the people who have threads over at CA? I'm guessing the admins split up the thread into the correct categories, but I can imagine that being very awkward.

I think the whole 'sketchbook' idea is cool, but it will also be nice to have a section for the really polished stuff :). Here's my question: can we change the photos in our submission for the featured artists but? It's been a while since I entered it and I've got a fair few shots that are better than what I entered there.

EDIT: oh yeah, and how am I going to live without my post count? Noooooo!!!!!!!

By the way, I think our old threads should stay in an archived section. It'll show a link to the past, but it would also force us to do new work and get away from that star rating system based on old work. :)

2 things I like:

- I didn't have to re-register to get in these forums.
- I like the photography being separate from the concept art. Much more respect for each form of art. & the whole real deal of photography can be seen in the sections. It's not just point & click people (well maybe sometimes it is :D )

I'll be posting when I get the chance!

lol, I thought the same at first, but the more I thought about it the clearer it got. I think the different categories can concentrate the comments/critiques better. It's a bit hard to critique a subject matter that you do not like. Often come across this a lot when getting critiques on macros and still life photos.

Rhynome

Wow, I'm in awe! I think I just had a happy tear of joy stream down my face.

I do like the different sections [which have long been a dream], especially the ones for scrapbooks and challenges, they're really the two main entities of the old forum, but now with these new categories maybe, just maybe, people will feel more inclined to post in them... maybe.

Ivy [Uh, William, right?] I'm sure you'll get used to it. After all, most of the old forum was just scrapbooks, then the occasional challenge that got lost in the flood of personal posts and everynow and then someone celebrating something, "ooh, I'm going to do professional photography, ladida, look at me!" and I'm sure I threw in some insults in the original quote. So now it's just a case of Scrapbooks for all of us, each an individual one that we can call our baby and cherish like it's our baby, and if you hurt my baby I'll cut you, photo Challenges that if you have the time to enter you must enter or the rest of us will lynch you, a lounge for threads like this and for the above quoted example, and lots of other shiny stuff for us to get sucked into.

I've been putting off taking photos recently, 'cos it's so damn dreary and I've had some other stuff to do, but now I don't think I have any excuse.
Thank you Jason, Davi and anyone and everyone else!

Group hug?

Oh, further more, of course it's entirely up to each person how they handle their threads, but maybe they could put at least some of their portraits and other 'specialist' photos also in their scrapbook? This way if we want to look at portraits and learn from portraits and appreciate portraits then we can go to the portrait section and have a concentrated dose of portraits, but if we want to look at, say, Asadex's photos, including [at least some of] the portraits then we can go to the scrapbook of Asadex, just a little suggestion for any of you guys who may not have been considering it.

As for the archived forums, what about the Rose's suggestion that we start anew? Or do the almighty powers that be want them transferred over for a specific reason?

It's my first post on this forum, and true to tradition it's about three pages long and overly rambling... I'm home!

Some thoughts on the education/learning part of the forum...
I think the "Foundations in Film Photography" and "Foundations in Digital Photography" overlap too much. Film and digital are not that different. IMO the Film and Digital Foundations should be replaced by one general photography foundations category. Right now I don't know where to put threads that are not specific to the medium. The Darkroom section could be renamed Film photography and be about both darkroom tecniques and other film specific threads.

Le Gab, the CA emoticons will be back.
Or, there might even be special ones for PHM (PHotographyMob).

I'm gonna start photographing as soon as I've bought a new charger.
(or I'll just use the 4 year old digital camera).

Sorry if my photography will be more of a Photoshop art, but I think that's okay?
Well, atleast some photoshopping will be made.

I am not sure if the last status quo was that the sketchbook threads of the old forum will be transferred to the new scrapbook section, but I'd really appreciate that.

There's quite a few threads I kept checking out on a regular basis and that also means looking up previous pages and all.
Would be a shame if that was torn apart, esp. since there's a whole new section devoted to these kinds of threads!

A request. Can we have a Game, Music and Movie talk forum in the Lounge?

Not that I'd particularly care if that request was granted, but...

No idea what OT is i'm afraid, but the forum I mention is popular over at CA.

Rhynome
01-28-2008, 06:23 PM
OT = OTT = Over The Top.

It's a British saying from WW1, to go over the top was to go over the top of the trench, and so risk life and limb and... other parts. So, as you can imagine, the command to go OTT is somewhat... OTT, 'cos it's going pretty far.

Now it means more when something's just beyond what it needs to be. As in our little hovel is much smaller than CA, and so our lounge ought to be able to handle all the different threads, be they about music, film, toes, whatever.

Cleared it up a wee bit?

John.D
01-28-2008, 06:54 PM
I only needed to know what the acronym stood for, not the whole saying. I am British you know! :)

Rhynome
01-28-2008, 06:57 PM
Bah, I don't do half baked!

You're lucky you didn't get an essay on the British attitude to WW1 both in the trenches and out of them!

John.D

Damn it! I missed out on that!?

Rhynome
01-28-2008, 07:47 PM
Seriously, don't say stuff like that, I might just think you want to know. You have to be reeeeeally careful on that sort of ground. It's why I'm staying away from the in-depth crit thread in the mentoring section, 'cos I know I'll never come out again. Also, what might take someone a few lines to lay-out I need a good few paragraphs to do. Also, I'll write something, re-read it, and then totally disagree with it... so I really, really, REALLY, shouldn't spend any time in there.

... help me!

John.D
01-28-2008, 07:59 PM

Nothing wrong with in-depth posts Rynome. We're all artists and art critics here.

Rhynome
01-28-2008, 08:07 PM
Oi, no banning me!

No, seriously, it's a whole can of worms, let's not open it! Well, I'll be venturing off into the in-depth thread probably some time over the weekend. I need to break out my good ol' Crit Stick, again. Maybe I'll take it over to your Wandering Soul thread.

Cheers.

I hate to tell you this Rhynomw, but OT is actually Off-Topic in this case, as it is *really* off-topic for photography forum.

Rhynome
01-28-2008, 09:13 PM
Oooh, he meant that OT. I fail!

Shoulda realised that. So, is this a sepuku moment, or what?

John.D
01-28-2008, 09:24 PM
I don't see how it is at all off-topic for a photography forum if it wasn't off-topic for an art forum, but ok.

Morbid
01-28-2008, 10:37 PM
I'd say it's OTT, Off-Thread-Topic, this is a higher level of Off-Topic which is twice as bad. It usually results in being banned from the internets.

Rhynome
01-28-2008, 10:40 PM
Uhm, excuse me, I hope you don't mind my pointing this out, but you appear to have dropped the plural off 'internets'. Just a heads up, for you.

John.D
01-28-2008, 11:26 PM

Rhynome
01-29-2008, 07:16 AM
No!

Well, okay then, I suppose... spoilsport
I have a question for Davi and Jason Manley! When may the archive be copied over to the new forum?

Jason Manley
01-29-2008, 11:14 AM
yep...as soon as the remaining bugs are solved we are doing the following.

1. add featured photography member galleries up top. I sent the gallery layouts and the concept to the html guru and the php guru is moving the photography gallery editors to this site. At that point the featured artists can begin uploading their images and bios, weblinks etc...
2. run the archived old forums in this system and as time allows we will organize the old forums into their appropriate categories here. We do not want to see the archives stay archived...way too much good stuff in there. We have some code work to do to make this ready for the new boards.

Once these two things are done we will make a big announcement in the community and industry so that folks know we are officially up and running as planned.

There are a number of other things in the works in the near term like the registered member galleries and a pile of other things...this stuff always takes longer than I wish it did...but we will keep at it.
