Mike is a plumber and framer here in New Orleans from Texas. He is here to try and help the recovery of NO citizens that want to stay and rebuild. His left hand was injured badly on a job, and can't work now. His hand was cut accidentally when his saw kicked-back from a piece of wood. When I met Mike he had his head sunk low and was gripping his hand with his other hand, grimmacing in obvious pain. Mike couldn't even hold a cigarette still with his good hand, the pain was that great in his injured hand. He has no medical insurance, and could only afford the most basic aid; no meds, just the pins and stitches. He's stuck in NO untill he can collect from jobs he's already completed, which is next to impossible to do at the moment. LA's plan called The Road Home has crippled everyone, including those that came here from out of state to help rebuild the city and surrounding areas.
Mike says "...I won't let this beat me..." even though he's crippled physically, emotionally and financially.
I got word that Mike got home, and is back in school. An encouraging change of events for him. I'm still trying to get a hold of mike so I can send him that pack of smokes I promised if he let me use his picture.
