I really like no 8 - it has a very melancholic feeling to it. I'd cut the log in the left corner though.

carolupus :
Thanks, i think i should have moved the hole view so the log wasent trying to make aborderthingy with the photoframe. cuting it would make an odd size to the photo and alsp putting to many elements in one confined space. guess the best thing to do would be to fiks it up in PS.

Thanks for the comment! i dint even see the log untill you pointed it out (: a really helpful comment

I really like the tones and exposure in that one. :)

Did you try playing around with cropping on it?

Jofx
03-26-2008, 08:47 PM
Thanks!
no, because the corner of the building is in a nice position (golden rule or whatever) and the dark at the bottom is balancing everything, holding everything down.
What would you have cropped on it?

Jofx

I used the 3D glasses that are awesome. you know, the red and blue ones.

Your portraits have a very warm, natural feel, I really like that :) In some of them, the noise is a bit strong (18, 19, 27 for example). In the last one, too, but here, for some reason, I think it adds to the photo, together with the soft focus, mood and composition - I like this one.

I've got to get my hands on 3d glasses, too, that looks like a lot of fun :)

i tried doing that but it takes away the nessesery details in the shadows. it would become to simple of a picture: the shadows would just become big blobs of black... at least thats how it would look on my screen

Hey,

you have some really nice action photos! I also like 42 and 45 a lot. With most of your indoor photos it's a pity there's so much noise it sometimes "hurts". 64 for instance would be a really strong shot, I think, since the movement unsharpness is perfectly working for me in this context. But that's a camera issue, I guess.

I also like the ice-skateboarding experiments. Interesting shapes!

Keep posting! :)

Some of these are really great.

I especially like #38.

But i think in #68 i'd have cropped out the background, imho it subtracts fro the picture instead of adding. It's a good idea though, must've taken ages to get them in that position during a show. XD

keep posting :)

Nike- know if some cameras can proses less light? like a F5 on one camera would show the same amount of light as an F3.7 on another? (if you just think about light that is and forget about DOF and so on)

Well, I think the one thing is the sensor of the camera - some sensors produce more, some less noise when you're working with high iso - that depends on the sensor size, for instance - larger sensors that usually, but not always have larger pixels that can gather more photons at any light levels usually perform better in low light situations than small ones.

The other thing is a lens issue - fast lenses can be a lot of help when dealing with bad light situations - like a 50 mm f 1,8 or even f 1,4.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lens_speed
And then the way the lens is built does influence how much light can pass through it (reflections, stry light etc. - you can read more about it in the light transmission chapter of the article I'm linking to below). So try out different lenses and see what happens :)

If you're interested in all that technical stuff - the "transfer chain in digital photography", I always found that article quite interesting:
http://www.schneider-kreuznach.com/knowhow/opt_quali_e.htm

I really like #70 - nice portrait! - and I too like the feel of the last one a lot. Seems really cold :)

Love the self portraits - really nice composition in 89! I like 90 a lot, too - could be a random boring portrait, but with this expression in the face it's a winner :)

The action shots are coming along nicely, too - I like 100 and 101 best - they are a little bit underexposed, and in 101 the sky is very grainy, which could easily be improved by ps.

Keep them coming! :)

I took a chance to check out your whole thread. You have some really good work on here! I can see experience and good eye on most of your works and my only crit would be this.

You take so many pictures of people and this mysterious candid fog seems to be your style of choice. I think you are too good to keep going candid. Get them doing something you want and make a materpiece from it! Some of the skate shots where they got big air are amazing! #103 is really good too. Look where the light hits the side of the girl on the right. Almost perfect to see her figure and tone. If the other one was angled a bit as well then both would be bathed in that color and It would be really awesome!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks EvrEst. Im actually working on making my paintings more than just paintings to, trying to go deeper some how. maybe i should try to make themes for my photos, try to get some things that aren't totally random. I like just taking pictures of things i do and the people im with so there will still be lots of candid pictures i guess. Anyhow thanks for a useful comment; ill try to grow :)

that would be really cool to see, if you could set up a theme sometimes when you go out. I would never want you to stop shooting candid bc thats what you love. Just add to it. themes can be shapes, colors, emotions, even a random object that could create a story.

I really like 108/109/111 Nice composition on each and the effect turned our really well!

I like the effect of the fires heat and smoke. Really good! As always good portrait :) With the heat; some of the focal point is somewhat missing and it may be that your camera had trouble focusing through the effect maybe your too close or too far away. distance is all i can narrow it down to.

I love the Hard shadows in your last post! 116 is my favorite by far.

On 118, Its a great pose and the lighting does it justice, I see some brush work on the right edges and I think If you could tweak the BW color cast and use the brushes MORE; even on her face it would create a much more dramatic piece. Im thinking lights lighter and darks a bit darker. That way the brush strokes you use would be more defined and add an aged appearance with the scratch work that would create an emotion as if the piece was put through trials or disasters and still survived.

:)
