those aren't photos of homeless people, but pictures I don't know where else to post, ahem...
the first ones were taken in a local WW2 bunker. it's completely dark down there, so I had to use torches, flashlights and, of course, the camera's flash.

Wow I am jealous haha I love underground structures and when I went to Germany I found as many to tour as I could in my normal tourist progression.
That aside I really love the second to last one. The lighting and forms are really compelling to look at. It has a really nice composition with the shapes drawing your eyes around the image and keeping them within the frame. In general I like the last three the best. In the first ones that focus mainly on textures the focus feels awkward and the first isn't focused really. Those things you probably have noticed on your own but just pointing it out in case you haven't.
Great textures overall. mmm textures.

holy shot - that last one is eerie as hell!
Quite interesting results.

these are creepy and that first one looks like a health risk...
but the mood is excellent, strong emotion, really claustrophobic.

Yeah, the atmosphere in these is amazing.
Very nicely done.

thanks a lot!
I'd like to go back and take some more pics with a tripod this time but I find it's hard to find people who'd come along... it is a health risk indeed plus it's quite easy to get lost, that place is huge! but i like that atmosphere so much...and it's actually illegal to go there without a guide - forbidden things are bound to be fun :D

haven't posted in a while here... but now I have a new lens and I'm experimenting more again. also using RAW now has made me try out more, especially with colours. I really like desaturating and bringing out only some colours right now. not sure if that works though.
and I have my problems with architecture photography, I don't know where to begin, which angles are good, does it always have to be the whole building, what about the stupid annoying signs everywhere around in the city...? please help!
what's good, what's wrong etc...

I also have my problems with taking photos of human beings. I've never wanted to do it at all, I thought people standing in front of waterfalls etc destroyed beautiful nature shots. Now that I'm living in a city with more people than nature in it I thought I'd give it a try. I've always liked watching people do whatever they're doing after all. I only don't much like taking pictures of posing people. So I tried capturing people just doing their stuff, unaware that they're being photographed. I haven't got much idea how I'm supposed to do that though, so again, please help!
what's to do better, what is ok etc...

Lol, it looks like you went on a "backside" craze for a bit there. Most of the poeple photos are from behind:) I have no experience in capturing people. Mainly because I'm afraid that they'll spot me and be mad.
carolupus
04-15-2008, 10:06 AM
that's exactly why they're from behind ;) only far away people are safe enough for me to take photos of their faces. but for that I'd need a super-tele.
actually I think I have the same lens as you - a Tamron 55-200...?!

Have you seen EazyM's thread in the Photojournalism section?

ah, ok. I guess the AF is even slower than mine then.. ;)
@ purplerose: thanks! So you think for first try they're not that bad? I'll definitely try some more, although I don't feel as relaxed taking photos of people as of things or animals... but it's fun anyway.
I've seen EazyM's thread and I like the photos. There's just never as much going on in the streets of my city.. It's actually quite a boring place, really. There's a flea market (weak, I know...) though this weekend and I'll try to get some nice photos there...

I hope you do! :)
flea market should be a great place for shooting :)
I like your first street attempts, especially 01, 04, 08, and 09. 04 might be even stronger if you increase the contrast a bit and maybe make it a bit warmer (white balance). But I really like how the mother's legs and the wheels are in motion and the child is sharp.
08 and 09 have beautiful warm light which matches to the subject very well... has a peaceful and relaxed feel to me.
I'm really looking forwards to some flea market photos - I hope the weather in Vienna is nicer than here in Innsbruck :)

here they are, the photos from yesterday's flea market in Linz. The weather was a bit weird - the sun was shining most of the time, but there was quite a strong wind so that the people had to hold their stuff really tight and in the end it started raining, so I haven't had that much time to take photos.

Wow, that has been one productive flea market visit!
You've captured the atmosphere really well, I think.
Some great shots - my favourites are 2, 4, 6, 15, 16, 17, 20.
Great idea - to practice at a flea market - I'll try that, too, I think :)

1, 5, 12, 23 & 25 are really nice.
Perfect timing in #12 though. Even the dog is looking at the weirdly dressed lady. :)
Really like the depth in #5.
I think if you crop out the feet at the top and the wheel on the left, it would help focus the attention on the little kid.

hello and thanks!
@ Nike: it's been fun to watch all the funny people, but it was kind of stressful because there was so much input. so many things and people to take photos of! maybe next time I should be more selective. the good thing at a flea market is that people get all kind of weird expressions on their faces plus they're occupied with other things than watching if someone is taking a photo of them. some did notice though.
@ purplerose: thanks - that lady was my favourite ;)
I already tried to crop the boy picture but it wasn't as interesting. somehow the boy draws even more attention when he's not alone in the picture.
Yesterday I wanted to go to a 'Mostkost' (something typically Austrian I believe - people getting drunk by being able to try loads of alcoholic beverages for free). The advertisement said people would wear traditional costumes. well, to say the least it turned out pretty disappointing, so I went to the river where there is going to be a fairground soon and there's also a big sports area. I'm not that happy with most of the shots though, not sure what went wrong that day. But then again, I'm also not that happy with the flea market shots - I think I could have done better.

You have some awesome photos here. I am not digging the people photos but thats a personal feeling.
Your photos of the WWII bunker are interesting...the texture and shadows really bring a sense of mystery to the place.
Your linz 2, 3, 4, and 7 I think are the best so far. The dynamic lines interacting with the very concrete architectural lines really make the photos interesting.
Great Job all around, keep it up!

hello, I'm back!
been quite busy so far, with working for a photo studio now, basically just pixel shifting but it's still cool doing at least something in that direction :)
meanwhile I've been on a holiday in Rhodes, Greece. Nothing fancy, just the ordinary relaxing on the beach, but it was still really nice. didn't get to take many photos though, but here are the few ones I got. I managed to stay up late for night shots and get up early (5:30 am) for sunrise shots.
