wow, i was checking in here, to see what you guys have been up to and *bam!* a whole new site! i'm thrilled!
good to be back, sorry for being absent for quite some time.

the a-photo-a-day-idea is great, i really enjoy doing this on my website, but putting it in "the open" for a community like CA is way better than just posting on your own website.

as always: crits and comments more than welcome!

so you cammed back from your 'disappear until you're asked about' adventure.
good.
now start posting. or else ... uhmm ...I will... aaaa ...you know, stuf.
so yeah, it's like that, ok.
kisses and hugs.

very good photo. but i don't like the ''branch'' that's devideing the picture in 2. the colors are great. and good light.
cheers.

thanks so much for the warm words, everyone! i'm flattered!

alucard - i see what you mean with the "branch" - i hadn't noticed it so far, but you're right, it's a bit distracting... i didn't get the "disappear until you're talked about" thing at first, but then i saw someone's thread in the lounge. so, here i am. it's been a pretty busy year, but i hope to be on these boards more regularly now... thanks!

mr mu: thanks for the nice words here and in your thread. my website is www.stine-wiemann.com
that's where i post a photo or a drawing/painting every day (or at least i try to do so).

klips - ha, i get it now. :) thanks a lot!

purplerose - thank you, glad you like it.

so here's today's photo. i haven't been able to work on it in photoshop so far, since my computer isn't really working right now. so excuse the slight shift to the left, i'll work on that the moment photoshop is up and running again...

the look is really nice and amiable. Skin looks really pale, though... too much time spent in basements in front of a monitor or deliberate lighting decision?

stine
02-23-2008, 06:23 PM
thanks for stopping by, mr. mu! it was a combination of both with the light: i wanted to create a sense of depht with the darker background and he really is sort of pale right now... :)

Very cool. This seems 'graphic' enough to be wallpaper friendly. If only the center bottom "nodule" was in focus.... :)

purplerose
02-24-2008, 06:50 AM
I like the soft focus. :) I think the color cast in the bottom left corner is a bit distracting though. Would look great as a B/W after a bit of contrast tweaking.

eazym
02-24-2008, 08:03 AM
nice, but what's going on exactly? backlight and flare (on the left?) or is that just a gradient applied in PS? Really tack-sharp in the center with strong contrast, and then it kind of bleeds out towards the edges...is it one of the above? or something else entirely?

stine
02-24-2008, 05:40 PM
thank you all for having a look!
scientuslatens: yup, you're right, but it was kind of difficult to focus on a tiny bit like that at 200mm. have to work on my stability... :)

purplerose: thank you! i tried it as a b/w version, thanks for the tipp.

eazym: i shot the berries against bright sunlight, shielding the lens with my hand. so no ps-work done here. the color cast is a very weird lens flare that created a kind of edgy ring through the whole photo... thanks for asking. i'll make sure to give a little more information on the photos in the future.

"sunwheel"

Mr. Mu
02-25-2008, 09:17 AM
standing high and dry: that's a nice shot pointing out an unusual area of interest about petals. Beautiful.

sunwheel: this is otherworldly. It's a shot of the spirit of flowerness rather than merely a shot of a flower. It's full of movement and delicate transitions. The light makes some of the petals transparent and some opaque - that's confusing and beautiful. Also, it's bathing the foreground in an even tranquility while falling off rapidly to the background. The light source must therefore have been rather close, I guess?
I need all the setup information I can get for this one, before my envy eats me up...!

°.0

but it was kind of difficult to focus on a tiny bit like that at 200mm

Question: do you have a DOF preview on your camera? I quite frequently use mine to get a clear impression of the shot.
Or was that remark rather about keeping the camera shake down with a big lense like that?

(in that case...

[]°
/\

...I'd like to point out my ASCII tripod...:D
)

scientuslatens
02-25-2008, 09:35 AM
sunwheel is def. a winner. man i need to get something living in my room so i can shoot (blame my shooting buddies for shaming me out of my nothing but still life/flower shots phase...) Despite the great range from the ethereal white to the black in this image, the whole is surprisingly quite easy on the eye. That one petal pointing towards the center of the flower is really a nice touch, almost telling you " Hey. Look right here, don't worry about what's going on to the right..."

eazym
02-25-2008, 10:04 PM
i usually don't care for pics of flowers, but the last two are solid. Good choice of color, feels very harmonious.

thank you all!
mr mu - haha, what a great tripod! need to remember that one, made me laugh really hard! you're right, i should carry it around more often, but mostly i'm too lazy to do so. :)
and thanks so much for your kind words on "sun wheel" - i made this one with a cheap macro lense that i love a lot. one of those that you can put in front of your "normal" lense... it was an overcast day so i didn't get a lot of shadows and reflections and the drop-off was a combination of a dark piece of paper put next to the flower. i increased the effect in photoshop then. that's all. when you don't have dark paper around, you can achieve a very similar effect in photoshop with the lighting effects. they're a great tool to enhance photos and put the focus on a subject.
again, thanks a lot for your kind words...

scientuslatens - thanks so much! i'll never get why people find still lifes, macros and flower shots boring. they're a wonderful way to get to know your gear and composition etc. plus: they don't run away. :) glad you liked it!

eazym - thanks, mike!

so, here's today's photo, just a quick one, been busy all day.
it's a shot of water droplets on a piece of lambswool fabric. since i don't own a steam iron, i always have to spill water on them to press them. and that caught my eye... nothing too special...

BTW, I bought flowers for my beloved today and when she had put them in a vase I had to think of your flower shots (it were similar flowers) and gave them a try with b/w film... we'll see... I consider this a mastercopy so I can learn a bit.

sorry for not posting yesterday, it's not that easy to come up with a photo every day... especially since i'm quite busy right now and don't leave the house that much. so it's another flower shot... very simple set-up: yellow flower, desk-lamp and light blue paper.

sorry, again a very quick one - here's yesterday's and today's picture - we spent a lot of time on the train yesterday visiting some friends in wiesbaden, germany. due to the heavy storm our train had to stop mid-way, so we arrived home quite late. didn't post yesterday because of that.

thank you all for stopping by! the moment i have a little time at my hand i will visit your threads, i promise. so sorry for just coming here to post my own...

jerrica - thanks so much! :)

morbid - thanks! 'clean' is exactly what i'm going for, so glad it gets visible in the photos... i carry a stack of different toned papers with me usually. plus: i normally work with an extreme DoF (1.8-5.6) so that in outdorr-situations like "pointed plant" the background mostly gets blurry and more homogen. when i shoot indoors (like in the last 2) i have several colored A2 papers floating around, since i'm a little into bookbinding. sometimes i use colored transparent paper, too. so usually a very simplistic setup...

valadilene - thanks for having a look, glad you like it. wish i had a garden, but we've got a good florist round the corner and a forest up the hill, that's all. :) i got the "grape hyacinth" (that's the one in the last picture) on the farmer's market, though. :)

so, here's the shot for today. haven't left the house much, so it's an indoor plant. eh, got to get more outside...

I like "outnumbered" makes me feel sad though. I've been to fairs and stuff where they use electric sting sticks (can't remember what they're called) to corral the pigs together. I think a B/W version of this photo would definitely work for the causes of an animal rights group. Other than that, highlights feel a bit bright to me as well.

Really love the DOF in "younglings" Seems it would be perfect for a square crop though, or maybe a collage?

In two words: great photo's :)
I like your fireworks and splashes, great dof and really nice summer colors.
For the last one, check what purplerose said, I absolutely agree with her ;)

thanks so much for the kind words and the tipps, you two!
perfectly right about the crop of "younglings" - i already used it for a collection of photos i put together from time to time. the photo you see here isn't cropped because i load all pictures of this thread directly from my website and i use a fixed format there.
anyway, great suggestion. much appreciated!

so, here's a quick update before i need to get back to work:

I like the red tones in "red alert." I feel it could be sharper though and possibly some better contrast and tighter cropping as well.

I like the green/blue contrast in "back to green(ish)." i wonder if it was possible to include the all of the flowers with minimal cut offs on the left side and the bottom?

Love the contrast and colors in "helicopter landing platform."

"elwood" is a sweet photo. :)

Love the DOF in "unforgettable." I'm thinking it could use some playful cropping though.

ment - yeah, you're right, that's a bright, bright yellow. but the reality was even more mindblowing. felt like it got burned in my retina. and the camera chip. :) i actually toned it down a little in photoshop, because otherwise it would've been way too much. maybe i should've desaturated it a bit more. thanks for the tipp!

Really nice work in "color drops" and "bon appetit."I think the contrast could be improved in both of them though; darker shadows/mid-tones ("color drops") and brighter highlights ("bon appetit"). The color contrast is excellent, but I think the tonal contrast could be better.

How close were you to that bee(?)? I'm afraid to get close because I've never been stung before. I wonder if some extension tubes would help? It'll be just my luck if I'm allergic... =/

thanks for the tips, rose! oh, and the bee is actually a hover fly, so it was totally harmless. this shot was done with some extension tubes, but i found that i prefer my extension lenses - they are way easier to handle...

here's my latest picture - this time it wasn't a hoverfly but a real wasp - it was busy getting off the sugar after it fell into the plum jam, so it didn't mind me getting its picture taken... but i have to admit that it was a bit alarming since i got really, really close to it...

thanks a lot for stopping by, jjod27!
to answer your question: i simply drilled a whole in my camera's body cap, then pierced a needle through a small piece of tetra pack (i think it was an orange juice carton) and taped that inside the cap. this helps getting the hole very small and tidy.

and that's it. shoot away!
make sure to keep us posted when you or your students have tried it!
