tremble... I'm back...
[old thread is here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=81547]
As the sun returned in a visible manner these last few weeks I got my camera out again and shot two color slide rolls which I had cross processed.
Basically just took a walk and shot whatever I felt like shooting. Will post the shots over the next few days.

Hey Jerrica,
yes, I was looking forward to that lonely red spot when I pressed the shutter. Glad you like it.

talkin about red spots...
the little orange light was blinking and I needed two shots to get it to appear on film, LOL...

ok.
I like a little greenish/yellow cast on cross processed slides.
But with this new roll I basically got a film where there's almost nothing there in the blue channel. It looks like a green monochrome pic.
W. T. F. ?!?!
converted it... I was really looking forward to that radiant blue sky behind the post. Feck.

great cross-processing, like it a lot. the last one is definetely my favourite due to the shallow DoF. it has such a great sense of depth in there, lovely. and that yellow spot of light in the upper right adds just another twist to it. looking forward to your next one! cheers!

Klips - thanks very much. I still remember you ranting about my blown highlights and all the good things I learned from your visits. Thanks for keeping an eye on my stuff.
darkchild - thank you! I am glad someone mentioned the tree bark, because I had a slightly guilty feeling for posting the ultra cliché of tree photography...:D But I just liked the shot. Thanks again.
VenomVindicta - thanks so much!
Stine - Stine! Your thread and contributions in the old forums were absolute highlights for me... if the bookmarks in my browser could show wear and tear the one for your thread would have probably fallen apart from overstrain...:D So, it means a lot to me that you like my shots!

Great stuff - you really have a good eye for interesting compositions.
In some of them, the green-cast is a bit too strong for my taste, like in #3, but in some, like in #7 it really adds to the picture.
I really like the dog in your last update - the focus is not on its head, but that gives it bit of a ghost-like feeling that I really like. Also the colors are very nice.

well cross-processing is never a totally predictable thing. #8 is strong by the way. Designers love negative space, too. CD jacket anyone?
Good to see everyone has migrated here

hi Nike,
thanks for your comments. About the colour cast. To be quite honest, I am a bit tired of the cross-processed look right now and thinking more and more of going back to b/w again...

yea, it's good to see you around, too. Also, CD booklet! I'll give that a thought for my Demo CD...:D

ha, that first pig picture is awesome. really like that one, because the pig is looking back at the viewer. admire your analog skills - i just got out my old pentax again with a b/w film. but it's not full yet... you really have an eye for interesting compositions, so keep them coming!

hey there,
back in black... and white... err
anyway, I am pretty pissed off, because I think I managed to ruin my flash. Not that I did particularly like it, anyway. It's about 25 yrs old and fires either at full power or at random (on four separate "computer" levels, metering light reflection on its own. In short: you never know what you get!)
Also, when using the test button, it never fired at the power it would use when pressing the shutter, thereby rendering the usage of a flash meter (which I have) mostly erroneous.
But still, it was my only flash.
And now I ruined it by trying to make it fire like I pressed the shutter (by pressing a ballpen into the PC cable, short circuit on the flash and fire! heh). What it did now was fire with the power it would use when the shutter was pressed, but also it started firing at random four to six times after the shutter had been pressed, increasing the overall light amount.
long explanation for "I ruined my flash and had to watch my newly acquired disco stroboscope mess up my film"

Your photo's are great.
I like especially nr. 11 the pig looks so sad, a great composition and atmosphere.
I like the subject of your still life a lot :) The field garlic (?-Lauch?, heh :)) looks a bit too light/ overexposed on my monitor - but ther than that the colors are very nice and I like the composition, too :)
Sorry about your flash. It really sucks when photography gear is breaking down.

A little more contrast in the greys of the flower would make it pop more and the background is a little disturbing.
Mr. Mu
03-18-2008, 06:01 PM
Hi Ment,
thanks for the suggestions. I was a bit unsatisfied with the background, too, but couldn't bring myself round to changing the arrangement as I gave the flowers to my beloved one a few hours before that day...^^
But you are certainly right with your impression.
stine
03-25-2008, 08:57 PM
hey there and sorry for stopping by this late. and of course "thank you" for the "name dropping", i'm really honored!
really enjoy those flowers - i find it incredibly hard to shoot flowers in b/w. you did a great job in capturing their textures.
i would second ments commentary, though. maybe a little photoshop work on the last one would do the trick. as i mentioned before: the light filter "soft spotlight" is a great tool for correcting difficult on-set light conditions.
anyway, i guess your beloved one was really happy about those flowers, they're really beautiful!
cheers!
stine
Mr. Mu
03-25-2008, 10:53 PM
Hey Stine,
the textures are really hard to get right. All in all it was really an out-of-control situation (remember the stroboscope flash... I think it fired three times on most of the shots. I just couldn't stop that damn thing.)
I will get me some SB24s or something some time soon and get back to the flower theme. Thanks for the hints!

I love the last two - brilliant photos.
Did you use a filter for the first one?
Mr. Mu
07-26-2008, 12:09 PM
hi and thanks Nike.
As both of these are infrared photos I needed a filter to block most of the visible light and thus expose the film to infrared light only.
With the Kodak HIE a red filter (#29, IIRC) did the job.
Other brands of IR films need special IR filters which let only IR light pass.

three burnt trees
(see strobist info on flickr)
this was a hard subject to shoot, as the place was rather dark and metering light was actually done by guessing as I don't have an IR light meter (if there is such a thing at all... I'd definitely buy one!)

concering colour on that last one... if
a) they kept on producing EIR and for a reasonable price, too I might have tried it...^^
b)I own a digital SLR capable of IR shots once I will try a shot like this in false colour IR which often looks a bit like this...
