wirelessly triggering speed lights?

okay Nikon user here I've been reading up on the whole nikon CLS system the big question I have is what if you don't want to have the need arise where you need one flash to go off to trigger another what options are available, pocket wizards? and how exactly do those work , do you have to buy receivers apart form the actual trigger and such? help!

Pocket wizards are the pro choice, theyre the best. Though there are cheaper less reliable ones like the Cactus triggers. I had 3 pocket wizard IIs but sold and got cactuses because I couldnt justify the cost. (PWs cost like 10 times as much)

Or you could get slave trigger cells or use the CLS if you got nikon flashes. Theres many ways to do it, you should check out lighting 101 on the stobist link ukan posted.

one main question what exactly do you need to get the CLS system up and running?

I have never tried it but I think its enough with a nikon cam and a CSL supported nikon flash.

I've got cactus triggers for my 2 stobes, work fine, specially for the money.

Radio poppers are looking like they may be good, though not sure when they are going to hit the market.

I'm digging this up for a similar concern:

I have a D300 and got an old SB-28DX. They're not really compatible, as I learned when I tested them.
D-TTL flashes like the 28DX don't work with the newer camera models, only i-TTL types of flashes.

So I thought that I might try the following combination:

- D300
- SB-28DX (D-TTL)
- SB-600 (i-TTL)
- Radio-triggers

On Amazon marketplace, there's a radio trigger set with 1 transmitter and 2 receivers for 30 bucks,
which is about 15 times cheaper than one Pocket Wizard.
For candid shooting, I could use the SB-600 on-camera (which is not possible with the 28DX.)
For wireless, I could use the 28DX and the 600 manually (strobist style) triggered by the radio transmitter.
Question is, will it work? Any ideas?

Well I didn't know how old exactly the 28DX was, but I read some stuff about it and I'm pretty sure that it will work this way.
