Here's a realy grainy portrait I shot last night for a friend. I couldn't get anything good out of my flash so I all I could do was bump up the ISO to 1600 and hope for the best.
Grainy or not - I like it - nice light.
I just took a look at the thread yu've linked to. Nice stuff, I totally love that huge mountains-panorama.

I like the portrait.
The cats kind of blending in with the guy...but it looks kind of cool haha.

Nice one. I didn't even see the cat until I read Miyuki's (Gentile) comment, lol... I feel blind now. :(
I think the highlights could be increased a little.

Hi guys,
haven't posted in a looong time, that could be because I haven't taken any photos in a looong time. I took the day off work the other day and just wondered around town (Brisbane, Australia) and did a couple of shots. like with all my work, these have been photoshoped a little.

1st picture of the last post:
Personally, I am not a big fan of the upper half, I think that it is too washed out compared to the bottom half that, in my opinion, is the much more interesting part. I would have cropped off the top half but am debating whether or not I think a little bit of the fence at the very top would help or hurt the composition. Secondly, I am not a big fan of the trash on the left hand side and would bring that border in. But I really like the bike and shadow.
Second picture:
I like the lighting on the building in the back alot, but I think they eye is not drawn any particular place, and as such a geometric picture, I think it suffers from a lack of center. I want to focus on the long line with the cross hashing on the back building but there is too much other stuff going on.
Third picture:
I really like the sky, but I find the lamp post to be too dominating.
Overall, I like your work, especially many of your portraits.

Thanks Mollyduker
I do tend to want to put too much into my images, probably stems from my concept work. I tried your sugestion and I do think it's improved the picture tenfold, but now the big dark shadow on top right is buggin me. Ah well, what can you do (I might have a go at reconstructing that dark spot with some photoshop magic, then again I might not).

You might try just dodging it a little in photoshop and see if that helps?
Hi guys,
It's me 'Rydel' under a new guise. Here's some pics that I've been working on (by no means final). Just getting my head around Light Room.

wow great thread! I love the blonde above, great capture! The deer the birtds all wonderful pieces and the 2nd to last one of the dock and pelican is wonderfully put together!!!
I would love to see more. Australia is one of the places i dream of studying photography at.
Thanks EvrEst. Australia is a beautiful place (for the moment). Better get here before "they/we" ruin it completely :)
Anyway, here's some more of me looking out of our office building, trapped in the daily drudgery of the games industry (it's really not that bad).

I know this problem just too well .)
Nice work, I really like the experiments with reflection in your last post - the last one is my favourite, I think the reflection really adds to the composition.
Keep shooting! :)

very cool!, I agree with nike about the last image of the post before with the reflection. its at a perfect angle.
This last one, I really enjoy the last pic, the comp. lighting and noise give it a very good vibe! Job well done! the architecture one seems a bit busy, i havent studied that side of the industry yet so i couldnt tell you the best way to fix it :(
Good posing on the first two, the second girl with such vibrant colors is awesome but her skin complection may look better in BW, have you checked it out?
Went out to a local look out on the weekend, over looking Melbourne. There was a storm front building over the city which I thought I could catch. unfortunately I didn't have my tripod with me and my heart was thumping, having just climbed up a tower for a better view, so the images are a bit blury.
I've also been getting realy into cropping my images within an inch of their life (man I wish I had a Hasselblad). It's strange, up until a month or so ago, I've been reluctant to crop my images, thinking that the images loses it's purity (or some bullshit like that). I know people who keep on insisting that "you have to compose within the camera", which is fine. I compose in camera as a matter of course, but bening an illustrator, not haveing absolute control over my subject tends to limit my options (at times). The 'normal' photographic proportions (what ever that means) is quite alien to me. When I draw I choose what the proportions are in respect to the impact I want the image to have. The only times that I am constrained to a fix proportion is when I'm doing storyboards, due to obviouse facts. Liberating my self from the antiquated notion that on my be true to the "pureity" of a photo has enabled me to return to some of my earlier exposures the I've passed over because of minor (and major) compositional misgivings.

Amazing work on the last post! those are really something to be proud of!
Composition is what you make of it. There are guidelines and if you want to know how to tel a particular story you can pick up some decent books at a used book store. In my opinion we have to crop our work for the most part. In portraiture you shouldnt have to but thats because you have more control. The rest of the work may have to be cropped just because we cant afford the right lens for the job! As long as you like it then do it!

Wow. Really cool stuff here. I really enjoy the middle pic in post 12 of the buildings. It reminds me of a series of Hong Kong apartment building pictures I saw once. I really like a lot of post 23 too. The antennae over the treeline reminds me of the forest moon of Endor. The black and white of the storm moving in over the city is awesome. Also, the collection of telephone poles and street lights is great, really nice composition.
