Blind Contour Drawing: Blind contour drawing is an exercise in which you draw the subject without looking at your paper. The point of the exercise is less about coordinating your hands and your eyes, and more about direct observation. Do not focus on your hand and where it travels; focus on your subject matter, especially one that is moving about (Say the head of an unsuspecting civilian eating lunch at the mall). The motion is in fact GOOD. Let yourself become entranced with the movement and observation of the subject; the way the planes alter in value as they move in different directions, how form contorts in perspective, how light reflects and bounces off planes. This drawing technique is even useful for observing things like color; Your ability to observe is heightened quite alot, but again, do not focus on your hand; just trace the lines with your eyes and kind of move your hand in the general direction. When you are finished, the result is much more on your brain than on your paper; your paper will be a mess of lines with perhaps a discernable nose or ear or eyesocket, but little more if anything else at all is expected.
