good-fortune's sketchtastic-ness

EDIT 10-7-09

I have a very diverse style and I don't think people know that when they skim my first few posts. Here's a sample of my more recent work....I'm slowly starting to broaden my portfolio towards game related concept art as opposed to the animation geared port I currently have.

I like what I see thus far. The gestures are impressive, and I also like the stylized pictures too

comic character

i'm taking sequential art right now. i have 9 weeks to come up with a story, create characters, pencil 5 pgs, ink then color those, and have them published in a class comic book. quite a tall order. i can make a film in that same amount of time, but sheesh no time to mull anything over.

well here are the characters for said project. it's halloween. she's friends with the cute and teethy creature. and of course you need bullies to threaten the creature's candy supply. i'll post the panels as i work more on them.

I got sketch books filled with gesture drawings. I really enjoy looking at them; as much any finished work I make. I figured I'd compile some of my favorites. Slapped some color on for readability. I'll post more down the line.

here are some sketches i did for character design class. on the barista i tried to emphasize the curves in different proportions. and the fellow in the glasses was inspired by my middle school teacher. yes, he looks young. he was only 23 when he taught us.

o'lak is based off of jennadelle's style. i was challenged to make a human instead of her preferred anthro characters. it was tricky balancing his humanoid form with her animalistic qualities. i'll post up the ortho views when i'm through nit picking.

man, i love not being grounded to one style.

thesis character sketches

i'm the production designer on my friend's 3d thesis. it'll be a dark surrealist inspired animation. it's been quite the challenge for me, because i'm not well versed on the movement. i hit up the regulars like dali and such for reference material. but i'm really a fan of alexander lyamkins character designs because he applies the surrealist style to various body shapes.

anywho, here's my sketches thus far. the first set i was just fooling around with making grotesque characters and not really worrying about surrealism. the next few were getting closer to what i wanted. i don't think i've gotten quite where i want to be yet. the final design should be ready very soon though.

Taiylz: Thank you. I'll have to check out that blog now. I greatly owe my skills to the character design class I took with Nancy Beiman. She has a book out, which I highly recommend if you want to create your own. I'd say it's the best out there because you learn to draw in any style, not just the author's.

I picked up a movie called Shaolin Monk. It was perfect for gesture studies with all of those full body shots. I tossed some paint on my favorites.

I was recently taking a class about teaching art to children. We actually got to make a number of art projects so that we could understand the format for teaching. At the end I designed my own lesson and I chose Chinese paper cutting as the theme. This is my sketch for it. I shaded out the parts that would be cut away so that I could make sure the paper would still be connected as a whole. I rushed while cutting the sketch so I might just recreate a digital work in Illustrator. I can't wait to show it off!

nancy and i met up to co-design her film's characters. we needed them more simplified and instantly read-able so this is what we came up with. so long as she's happy, i'm happy.

working on my port

so i've finally graduated. while i enjoyed doing work for each of my thesis films...i wish i had the chance during school to make my portfolio top notch. thus i've been hardcore arting these past few weeks. i've challenged myself to make a (sketch) painting/drawing a day. one of my projects has just been picking up this old painting i started last summer. this is still a WIP mind you.

So I've been busy polishing my portfolio and making my website/business cards. I designed the koi fish for the aforementioned. Life drawings are next on my agenda.

I love the curvy body shape you apply to a lot of your female figures. They put me in mind of the sort of 1950s ideal of beauty.

Missile: Thanks, I'm glad to hear you're a fan of that ideal 50s figure too.

I've been working with realistic (ish) figures still. This is the latest result. I like using limited tones for shading. I haven't decided if I like her hair, but that's the least of my worries.

So I'm once again trying to prove that I can draw guys. And muscular ones at that. I picked him as reference because he is so far from the type of guy I admire/draw. I'm forever trying to push my boundaries. Even the coloring style is different than what I normally do. Oh and *gasp* I'm doing a background too!

Soooo...I have artist block like whoa...these are the last 2 things I was working on. I can't bring myself to finish them. I guess I need to step away from them for a bit.

For the guardian WIP I still haven't gotten around to fixing the clothes. And the background is pretty meh. At least I fixed some perspective issues and got basic lighting for the background. I wanted it to be a day scene, but I feel like it'll end up being a full moon night.

The irish girl WIP is just being blocked in. I'm drawing pretty aimlessly with it. It's not very concepty so I may hold off on it for a few months.

Yesterday I decided that I need to start a fetish/goth series. I'm hoping I can sell this stuff at events and maybe get a gallery show down the line. So here's the first sketch of my proposed project. I'm going to color her in tomorrow.

The last sketch posted here is finally finished. I really enjoyed comparing my progress shots to the final work so I compiled it here for you to see it too. I think the photo reference I shot for lighting truly took this to the next level. It was a lot of fun trying out this new technique as well.

WOW. So last I posted I was just starting a series that would tailor to the a few fetish/gothic venues. I was hoping to have a few coherent works finished before I presented my art to a few galleries. But lo and behold, one of those galleries contacted ME first. I'm reveling in the moment still. I've been kicking my ass into gear and I've been working on my next piece. This is a little excerpt for now. This screencap isn't the stylistic direction I'm taking it anymore, but I enjoy it nonetheless.

My gothic/fetish series is on temporary hiatus while I'm finishing this beauty for a steam punk competition. I haven't polished up the shading so here is the flat color version. There'll be glass shatter and a minimal background to follow. I'm nervous to finish it in time, but I'm incredibly proud that I drew a character with clothes finally! Hehe. I certainly learned a lot about folds in the past month.
