Painter X (divine proportion)

Hey folks,

kicked out a couple of speedies in the NEW Painter X (luv it!!!).
I started messin with the divine proportion guide. I did one piece without
it and then began to re-crop the image using the guide. Very fun and eye opening. The other i did with the guide already in place.
thought i'd share.

cheers

dan

Great stuff!

Really makes a difference I think. looks far more dramatic.

I knew about the golden section, but not the diagonals. At least, not conciously.

That is one impressive looking-tool! It makes Milligan quality at the click of a mouse! (not quite as fast as Milligan himself) Who woulda thought?

I like the square version of the first better than any of the divine versions, but that's probably because you composed it for the square.

I like the second crop, second picture it is... it is asymmetrical, less stable and makes more for my own finish of the picture in my imagination.
Every time your crop it changes focus in picture. His arm holding his rifle is very domineering because of light value, my eyes end up on this object if it is in the picture... if it is not, like in the forth picture the other hand takes the most attention or maybe space between two soldiers, the lightest spot... In the first picture his mouth with white cigarette is prevailing, but hand with rifle more, I think. That's interesting, slightly above center spot is always the most attention demanding.

Second picture figure is much more handsome now, pose is better and you added more details for more interest. As I said before, very genuine, very truthful, like you know the subject very well... his foot closest to us... i think it is too far from the body or perspective is not right... maybe I'm wrong...
You added the smoke, that killed a lyrical mood a bit, adds effects. I take lyrical every time over effects. I liked vanity free horizon more. Grasses and calm horizon, it was nice.

Damn, thats pretty sweet...compositions that work with the click of a mouse. Hard to believe that feature hadn't been added already.

What's the nautilus-shaped outline in the last picture, and what's it significance? Posture and placement I assume? I've always wondered what that was - what's the official name of that method?

Nice job, by the way!

For those of you who are not familar with this theory.
Lifted this off Painter web site.

"New Composition Tools: New composition tools help artists and photographers visually arrange a blank canvas prior to sketching or painting, or create an aesthetically pleasing composition from a photo using the Divine Proportion tool and the Rule of Thirds. Used throughout history by artists, designers, and architects alike, the Divine Proportion will help you compose your paintings like the masters! Similarly, professional photographers often use the Rule of Thirds to compose their photographs."

Two objects, the biggest and middle size clustered together and the third, a small one far out to lead our eyes farther?

At College, when I studied composition, my professor told us how to build one. There is a measurement we do in order to catch the best composition on the canvas. So, you can understand that from the divine proportion, or Gold rule, each size of canvas will have its unique proportion.

Yet no amount of divine proportions can make your pictures look like THIS without the proper skills.

Yeah, asspats. Shove it, he freaking deserves them!

Of course... The DP is just a single tool amongst thousands of techniques which develop your skills. Someone once told me, use the tool to learn and understand, but never as a crutch, because you must walk with your own legs.
Scott Robertson for instance is quite an artist, he is able to stroke a straight line without a ruler. It means he reached the skill, but one day he made it throught a tool.

hmmm

the devine proportion thing seems o help the first painting aot.

the second one however still doesnt seem to work.

maybe there can be a stronger contrast between you character in the foreground and the background. he and the grave marker read as small and unimportant. they are overpowered by the background. cropping in more closely might give the viewer more of a sense of intimacy.

cool stuff

i like your use of color

I like the idea of the proportion thing but it seems to be limited to that proportion and that proportion doesn't always work when you have to do art for specific sizes.

And nice art, as always, Dan.

wow, turned out great!! we learned a little bit about the divine proportion in design school. its pretty interesting stuff and the formula lends to a lot of compositional possibilities. i thinks its technically called the fibonacci sequence and i believe there are others like it to check out. regardless awesome paint.

can painter X make coffee as well?!
cant wait to check it out.
