VC: Thanks, I will keep posting them. I realized today that my I am not paying enough attention to my line weight in my thumbs, I will focus on that and my next few should* be better
Kelly: Thanks, the world needs more snalis. King: So this isn't the environment I am working on. More or less just a diversion. I did it for EOW but the scan is so bad I am really sketchy about actually posting it. Note to self when creating art for digital display. use a digital medium, or at least scheduale a day just for color correction. So this is the concert hall on the great Train-City called "The Inevitable". I am at work atm so I dont have access to all the preliminary stuff that went into it, but when I get home I will post my thumbs and renders etc.

ok so here are those process shots. I rendered it out first in 3d, just a rough shot so I would have an easier time with the perspective and scale issues. It also gave me a base idea of my lighting. I think the mistake was that after I did the rendered shot I then started working on it on tracing paper then transfered the tracing into my sketchbook and rendered it out from there, I think where I screwed up is the tracing, it killed my line work and broke me out of a creative frame of mind. If that makes any sense.
Next time I am going to do thumbnails then do a render, then draw from the render (rather then trace) then do the final paint. We will have to see how that goes.

I like the idea of doing 3d sample to help you in perspective.Nice work, i like it very much and i understand what you say about what it causes to you.
About color correction you are right to spend time to do that, i often do it by color balance and other adjudgments in photoshop(i know its fault lol, i must make it traditionally) Keep up, i like your style ![]() |

Aww, dude she is so cute. Many congrats
.On to the art work, coming along nicely. I'll be honest, i preferred the tree in just the ink, but then thats preference; on a technical skill level, the water color turned out just fine. A little lacking in definition, but the color choice and tone is great! I love your recent environment btw, its awesome. Great color and definition combined.

Ellr: thanks man, I pretty much just stare at her all the time and wonder how I made something so cute, I put the credit on my wife. Concerning watercolor, I think it is fun, but it loses a lot of subtlety in the scanning process. I agree with you though it is lacking definition. hopefully you see some improvement in the future. I am working on a new environment right now. It has been really tough trying to find a format that I am really excited about.
King: As per your request I have baby drawings for ya.

Your Battle Baby is fantastic!
Is it the one with the adamantium claws, or the lazer beams?I just had my baby a month ago. Is she your first? It's so awesome to see other new parents around here! Best of luck with the changings, feedings, changings, feedings, changings, feedings. It *does* get easier.

really need good crit on this
So I mentioned before that I am working on a new 3-d environment during my down time. This is going to be a really crucial part of my portfolio so if anyone has crits or suggestions I would really appreciate it.
Seedling: thanks grats on your little one too. Yeah she is our first, I am loving it but it is definately stressful at times. Virginia handles it really well and I try to help where I can. King: yup gunna be a little less frequent but hopefully not by much, babies are fun to draw too.

Yay update!!! :D
ok first i have to say that even if the composition makes it a little messy(broken parts etc.) you made it very understandable. There is not really a problem but i guess a coloring is what it need, or if not a coloring a penciling show that we can see interaction with the space that surrounds the masses(you will tell me "i show it with the lines" but ok
).Its really great and if you can make it in 3d that will surely help you solve some problems that i dont see now .Keep up your really hard work (you know )Last edited by kingkostas; September 23rd, 2008 at 01:56 PM.. |

Sup yall. Another installment in the evolution of my down-time environment.
Apathy: Thanks... I think King: I agree with you about this getting a bit busy in the line drawing let me know if this pass helps Mig: thanks... though.. I cheated, my base drawing is a trace over of a rough Maya render. The color pass is also partially done in Maya. There is no extra credit for doing things the hard way. Though I think this kind of thing would be a lot easier if I had a great natural understanding of perspective the way experts like Vcoleman do.

Well I am going to start rendering this thing today. The plan is to take my rough "thumbnail model" to a finished state more in line with my new concept, but before I do I wanted to post this render. Essentially I have been building this in tandem with the concept updating each as I go.
Apathy: Yeah that thing was just cluttering my focus and made the environment less of a gameplay space and more of a set. Kostas: Diablo eh? That's not an accident. I am a big fan of the property. I am looking at their work for inspiration and art direction.

Thats it!!! Ok now help me(the viewer) see what goes down there.I dont know how you want to do this(you maybe throw some light from a wooden torch. That will warm us.Unless you want us to focus on the gate, then things are changing(but still think about balance
)Ohh btw i am glad you called me by my real name ![]() See ya pal (EDIT:lol i guess you were already working on this but its ok to remind lol) |

I wanted to update daily, at this phase though there isn't a lot to see. I modeled the railings and some columns and arches, I hope to get the rest of the base terrain modeled within the next day or 2.
Kostas:I am going to have the main gameplay space lit by the chandelier the area in the corner is going to be really subdued, a little surprise for people who spend some time looking at the render. Towarlock: Thanks, she is adorable eh? Its the best way to get sleep deprived. HAJime: Thanks, I have high hopes for this project.

Just another day of work on this thing. I placed new collumns and the grill today. I am glad I got it in rough because it is making me see a lot of errors that I probably would have missed. The bases of the columns had more detail earlier today but I decided it didn't fit with the rest of the shapes.
I am pretty excited about how the silhouette is working around the door, but tomorrow I am going to change the shape of that to better complement the shape in the door frame itself and probably shrink it down a bit. I am terrified of painting the textures for this thing. I think I am dreading it the most which means I really should take it head on as soon as I can to prevent myself from losing interest. Anyway I better get some shuteye before the baby wakes up

So I jumped the gun a little bit over the last few days and pushed my model a good bit further than was prudent before I had my UV maps and textures in play. I am repenting now and putting together some of my really basic world textures. This is the stone texture that I am going to be using on the walls. I should have a painted version by Sunday morning.
Kostas: bummer about your monitor. That's the sad thing about digital is that everyone sees your work a little differently
