Whitaker oil painting demo

The following photos were taken in very low natural light under difficult circumstances. The color varies a little from shot to shot. This was a demonstration, so I was trying to cram as many techniques as possible into the work and do it in a short time. The painting, an oil on canvas measuring 18x14”, was not finished.

I’ll be doing things like this at the Insomania workshop and I’ll try and answer as many questions as possible. As an old pro and teacher, my hope is to give you information that can cut years off your learning curves and put you ahead sooner.

thanks so much for sharing this, I've been curious about your process from start to finish, and this gives me a much better understanding of it, along with other stuff I've read, it gives me a much better understanding of oil painting.

Thanks Bill for another excellent tutorial, I swear I have saved every single one you've ever posted anywhere .
Anyway, I've spoken to you a few times via email and you mentioned that my local art museum has two of your paintings. I've approached them a few times to view your paintings but they were in storage. How might I convince the museum to get those paintings out of storage? I'd love to see your original works.

btw. I see u'r using a soltek...I love them but the legs on mine on rare occasions just collapses.

do you always start with highlights and darkest darks? I know nothing at all but I always thought its best to paint them at the end... Could you explain why you are starting that way?

I'm a big fan of your art, thanks a lot for posting this.

Zaknafain,

By first placing the lightest lights and the darkest darks against my neutral toned canvas, I mark the edges of my value range for that painting. It is especially useful if I wish to paint either a low key or high key picture. Of course I build up my paint in layers, so I’ll also reestablish darks and lights at the very end too.

Thank you one and all.
You have said nice things to me and not called me names.

I'm eventually going to post this demo on my website - when I finish redoing the site (takes soooo much time....)

Meanwhile, if you haven't checked out my other demonstrations, you might find something useful there.
