We are HL2: Subvertus, a single player mod for the brilliant game Half-Life 2.
We already gathered a small team around us, but are in need of a talented environmental concept artist.
We are continuing the HL2 story saga with our own ideas in a totally new environment.
Your main task will be to create environmental concepts for our mappers and here by creating a “new world”. This will be achieved by painting over screenshot of very basic levels in Photoshop or an other” high-end” graphical editing program.
They will range from frozen, desolate industrial areas/ bunker interiors/ city ruins/ “alien” architecture to big open snowy landscapes.
Our mappers will use these concepts as a base and guideline to create their levels upon.
Your role will make an easier task for the level-designers and make a better communication/link possible between story & environment, concept & mapper, mapper & other artists providing the mappers materials (such as prop modellers, texture artist, ect …)
We ‘re aiming for a high quality, enjoyable gaming experience. We are trying to achieve that goal in every possible asset.
If you are interested in joining our dedicated team, please post your contact data and examples of your previous work in the forum.
Note: This mod is non-profit and team-members WON’T be paid.
Thanks in advance
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

It all began with the Climate Controller. The Combine installed it in hopes of controlling Earth's climate for future use. But things went awry, not expecting the chaotic nature of Earth's weather patterns, the Controller caused parts of the planet to be scorched into bone-dry deserts while plunging others into an endless winter. But in some places the Controller worked, keeping places at a steady temperature and keeping storm systems away, such as City 17.
Half-Life 2: Subvertus is a mod based in frozen wastelands of Europe. You start off in the boots of John Hayes, a ordinary rebel stationed in an outpost deep inside the frozen wastelands. You wake up and begin your day. Getting orders to ambush a Combine patrol, you prepare to head out, but that plan comes to an end quickly...
We ‘ll be following this scheme in hopes to create a successfully working mod team.
1. Top-Down story dissection
The storyline should be divided from larger to smaller chunks until the individual parts are of the size of a small scene.
2. "Orange map"
The small scene should then be mapped with just placeholder (dev-textures). The map geometry should be kept mostly primitive and
also consist of placeholder solids for later prop models (for example cranes etc)
3. Paint overs
Then several screenshots of the map are given to the concept painter who will then paint-over the set (lighting, atmosphere, details) in reference
to the storyline.
Modelers and texture artists now have a "Master" concept guide to use as reference for the stuff they should do.
5. Assembly of map
Mapper puts the newly created assets into the map.
