interesting approaches on your faces.. expressions are good especially with no references, but I find the best way to draw people and get use to how facial characteristics are is to actually draw people. Doing some of these sort of drawings of just faces with reference would be good practice, it would help with proportions a lot.
In your second post the pirate guy (or seemingly pirate type) is a nifty idea, but the proportions are very cartoonish, as is he. It's a good idea, but as far as realistic goes it's not (then if that's not what you're going for no big deal) Nice clean line work, and a good approach though. Neat sketches.
