Breaking Old Habits.
Greetz. Might anyone be able to suggest some ways to help break habits, one of many being "petting" in lines, (Back and forth, back and forth.). Or perhaps some methods you might have used to escape comfort zones.
. Any information would be appreciated, and i hope this thread might end up helping more than just a few people.Perhaps, confess some problems and the hurdles you passed to help get yourself past the problem, it's all good! If no, then let this thread sink, no need to flame it all up.

+ don't make any sideway movements. Now, take 500 pages of printerpaper and start making cubes of 4 centimeters by 4 centimeters and give them a nice vertical raster. If that doesn't work, shocktherapy. Or you know, just try to pay more attention so you don't do it, even if it's damn tempting ![]()

Do you mean hobbits or rabbits? Though, breaking either at any age is just plain mean.

You need to find out as much as you can about gesture drawings (what are their purpose?). They require long fluid lines.

i might try some of these ideas haha... for me a hard habit to break is constant adjustments using undo (I guess it's the same as going over the line on paper)

Grab an object and start drawing it. Try to get the line right the 1st time. As soon as you mess up...throw the paper out and start a new one. repeat x1000
Also, it's been researched that it can take about 4wks to break a habit so don't expect miracles. It takes perseverance.

if i do anything the exact same way in a row three times, my other half gets to use a part of my body as a traget for her 9mm practice. Works every time, and I still have one leg and most of my teeth and fingers left...

draw from life with pen, do it every day, you'll get confidence that way.... just be conscious of what you wanna change, and you'll find it changing itself through reptition.

And i would go with what Ian Mack said...sounds good.... |

I also agree about the pen. I used fountain pen for few months and after that when switched to pencil, almost everything was single line.

If you make little fluttering lines with your pencil, put the pencil away.
Use a piece of chalk, conte, or charcoal. Use large newsprint, or any cheap large paper. Draw with the broad side of chalk/conte. When you learn to control the thickness and bluntness of it, use smaller pieces, and so on. Plus, it's messy and fun and you feel like you're 5 again ![]() |

I remember when I was a young'n hearing on T.V. or some such place that you have to do something around like 80 times for it to be programmed in your mind as a habit. So. Just draw 80 pictures without petting at all.
If you are still petting lines - Cut off your hands. The first one will be easy, you can just call it an "accident in shop class". It's the second one that will be trouble, but if you're creative you can pull it off (or cut it off, as the case turns out to be). Then, problem solved, no more line petting. ![]()

Fight the habit by starting a new, good habit. Practice this on a daily basis until it becomes muscle memory. Good luck.
