I've been inspired to start this sketch book, by the brilliant work of a good friend and colleague.
The work I'm posting goes back over a few years.
By day I work as a game artist, by night as an illustrator.
When I'm lucky from time to time I get to concept art for projects that the studio are pitching for.
This does not happen as often as I would like and it nearly always involves me working on the concepts in my own time.
I though it would be good for me to get all this work together and maybe some of you will find it interesting in some small way.
Over time you will see that I have had to adapt my style to fit what the art director and sometimes the style of game required.
I'll also try to post some of the freelance illustration work that I've been lucky enough to do.
Any and all feedback is most welcome.

great to see you posting here, Steve. Can't wait to see how this sketchbook develops.
Such a shame about that project eh? Anyway, keep posting, I know you have so much fantastic stuff to show and this is the best place to share your talent.
I'll try to make time to post up as often as possible.
Thanks for the inspiration.
salaryman's private parts are a wonder to behold..!!
Okay, not many responses.
I guess I'll keep going see what develops.
I was asked to concept some characters for a Manga style online game.
This is the only one I've done so far, been to busy with "other" stuff.
The original drawing was coloured in Illustrator, the taken into PhotoShop
and given the effects.
emmm, maybe I'm spitting in the wind here?
Okay deep breath and go again.
This image was done for a magazine cover titled Wasted.
Pencil drawing scanned then coloured in Photoshop.
The background was taken from another image that I had already done.
I'll get round to posting that another time.
This is another one you know only to well.
Another one that got away
Still this little lot will show the change in style to "fit in" with the
view about what "concept art" for games should look like by those with the power.
I'll start with the very first image.
One of the designers wanted to do a new take on an old game.
After speaking to him this was the first image.
I'll post the stages as we went through them.
Very nice SB! I like your clean style and in particular the last Portrait, very good work!
For the kind comments and for being the "first" person to post that I don't know
Right here's stage two of the game concept.
I had to produce an image that the studio could show the publisher.
The image had to give a flavour and feel of what the studio wanted to do with the game.
I had very little time to do the image.
It seemed to do the trick, the publisher liked it
The next stage will be some of the bikes and characters.
Now the change in style, dipping my toe in a more "painty" style.
wow. you're really damn good, steve. it is steve right? or would you prefer tekdj? seriously man, those last few pencil renderings, when you finished 'em look photorealistic- amazing. spittin' in the wind? haha, you got nothing to worry about. beautiful lines, amazing coloring job- i can guarantee this will be a five star book in no time. thanks for sharing these. the little bit you've shown is already inspirational. cheers!
oh and welcome to CA!
Welcome! This is definately some awesome work! you've got real skill and it's definately great to see your work and be inspired by it. I must say my favourite stuff is your more "painty" look, damn so realistic! It's beautiful! Keep going man, this is really great to see!

I love it!! Very nice and clean style. But I really like the more "painty" style you have on the last few posts. More like those Keep on posting!

I was starting to think, no body was out there
But salaryman told me to keep posting.
You guys are just to kind
Thanks very much for the positive feedback.
It's a real incentive to keep posting more "stuff"
sith...... It's steve or tekdj whatever you prefer
The SB so far it a bit of a journey through my life as a part time concept
artist here at the "studio" with bits of my other life as an illustrator thrown in.
My background and style is originally more graphic and some of the earlier
images are in a style that I was used to working with and what the particular
game publisher wanted.
The more "painty" style has come about as a direct result of what seems to be expected for game concept art, at least here at the studio.
It's been fun stepping my toe into something new and I must admit some of the comments from you guys gives me the confidence to put a few more toes in the water
I know from salaryman that this is the best place to show my stuff and get
the feedback that will help me develop as an artist whatever style I maybe required to work in.
It will be a mix of style that I'll be posting.
The cleaner more graphic stuff is what seems to be what I'm asked to do for the freelance illustration work.
The more painty stuff seems to be the way I need to go for the game concept work I'm asked to do.
Maybe when I get time to play I'll try mixing it up see what come out.
I'm in "crunch" time on the game I'm working on and it's been a lot of late
nights this week.
In between waiting for builds of the game I've been starting this SB.
It was a real booast to log on this morning and see your mails.
Soon as I get a little time I'll drop in on your SBs and say hi
Thanks again guys
These Sketches have been sitting around for a while.
I wanted to colour them but just did not know which way to take them.
Soon as I get sometime I think I'll have a go at giving them the "painty"
treatment, but for now here they are "naked"
great stuff dude. Love the clean bike pics..yaha

h2rra, tgfx thanks for dropping by, glad you like the work.
As I said it will be a mix of styles so hopefully there will be something for everyone
Daaaayum!!! this shit is clean! it does remind me of Salaryman's clean lines too. I got ta ask cuz this is the style i'm trying to develop. how do you get those dark pencils without smudging. Me drawings seem to become a mess if i try and render. holy shit are those characters in post #12 from your head cuz if they are ... wow! I am amazed how you can shade a large area without any change in pressure. whenever i do a large area you can plainly see where i stopped and started. I'm definatley gonna be back to this page often!! Thak you for the insperation.
-ThePenciler- your too kind man
The characters are a mix really, a pose from a photo here maybe a jacket from a magazine or film I've seen, the latest trainers I've bought.
Where ever the inspiration comes from.
The pencil work is just years of drawing ( I use a Propelling Pencil with HB or B lead ) don't push down too hard, let the pencil do the work. No real secrete to keeping things clean, I have a clean sheet of A4 paper folded in half that I rest my drawing hand on.
The only other thing is most of the drawings are done on tracing paper, I really like the surface and if you have to redo anything it's handy just to see what you did before
Okay people, sitting here late, waiting for this game to come to an end.
I found some work that I forgot all about.
This one should have been posted before the last "painty" stuff.
It's a concept that went no further than these images.
They were done in my out of work time and in a hurry.
It's great to have this SB as it's the first time I get to put all this stuff together and look back over what I've done over the last few years
Environment concepts first.
What were you planning to do with the environments then - I lke them, you should use them.
Really like the sketchbook
My sketches (such as they are)

Thanks for all the kind words people
