Smellybug Maquette Tutorial 2: Carriagekid

Hey there: Been getting a lot of friendly, but nagging mail asking when the next tut thing is going to happen; well here we go. Here's the concept: a creepy kid mutation complete with built in carriage. The images I'll be posting will be screen grabs from an in progress dvd.
If you want to be on a mailing list for any upcoming dvd or book project from me, send an email to pete@massiveblack with the words "mailing list" in the subject line. I'll keep you updated. Thanks, hope you like the tutorial.

This is gorgeous! The muscle colors and veins and shiny textures are amazing, too! I can't wait to see the tutorial.

Page 1: Armature construction. If you have any questions on this part, post 'm, or look at the other tutorial that goes into a bit more detail on the armature subject...

page 2: blocking begins. Here I'm using basic super sculpey which is perfect for this character because I'm going to make use of the pinkness and translucency in the final paint job.

Hooray! Another tutorial!

Forgive my newbness, but what are some of the things to consisder when setting up a skeleton? I mean sometimes the whole skeleton is secured to the wood base through the foot or feet of a sculpt, while others are suspended through the back like yours. What are the pros and cons of this?

Pearson: the reason I had the pipe come out the back was so that I could rotate it easily to get underneath the guy. It just depends on the character and the anatomy you plan to sculpt. With a typical biped, I'd probably fasten the feet to the board and just have an extra support coming off of the lower back if anything. It's just an access thing with this guy.

Peter

Quick question: are you using your formula to make this model?

1 box Sculpey
1 block white Sculpey III
1/2 block black Sculpey III

This is looking great so far, thank you for doing another tutorial!

Do you use the sculpey in its straight-out-of-the-box state or do you harden it a little first? I know some people will dry out their sculpey a bit by rolling it thin and placing it between some absorbant towels to bleed out some of the oil to make it more manageable. Just wondering if you go through that kind of trouble or not?
