Exclamation StarWars Covers--->updated 06/27/06 Salvaged Preview

Hey all,
Just got back from Montreal last nite. It was an awesome workshop! And I was overwhelmed to see so much great talent plugging away. There is nothing cooler than watching how each person creates and I've definitely learned oddles of stuff. Still trying to visually download everything that I saw. And for those whom attended, I did not demo this time around, but will eventually at a future workshop.

Just have to give a shout out to everyone at Massive Black for putting together a great event and to meeting some new faces. And of course, hanging with my great friends and meeting new ones! You know whom you are!

Finally, here are some Star Wars covers I posted last week... and accidently deleted the thread. So here they are again. I will post larger images of the other covers later this week.
-J-

Awesome work....i think the first one is the strongest. The light cast on the boy by the lightsaber looks very nice. The green halo effect around Boba Fett is odd, and the colors seem too saturated. The third one is nice too. Does the girl only have one arm? BTW: Why is Boba Fett in a book about people who use the force?

Yo Jason, I was wondering what happened to the thread after I commented on it last time. But now I know you deleted it. Glad you reposted because these really need to be seen bro. I love them! Although I really like that first one, my favorite is the girl. I dig the subtle colors and modeling. It has a very eerie feel to it. Can't wait to see them in print at the bookstore. Congrats!

Jeff---> Nice to hear from you! And I appreciate everything you said man... always admired your work ESPECIALLY the person stuff. The first cover is out in the bookstores(it was released 1 week ago). Random House/Lucas hired me because they wanted the new series to have a different look and feel more brooding/darker/mysterious. So it's good to hear that you picked up on the eerie feel. BTW, each cover I had painted... oh probably... 5 other verisons were created until one was finalized.

nofingers---> Thanks dood. THe 3rd cover, yes... she only has one arm. It's hard to tell because of the cropping and text. The color saturations have been heavely manipulated on the publishers side... so it's always shocking to see the end result when printed.

Ink_Monkey---> Super thanks!

GNL---> Thanks man. For each cover, I created the full dusk jacket... so I will make sure to show the entire images on the next two.

miljenko---> If I get a moment, I will see if I can hunt down and see if I saved the work in iterations. Usually I flatten the work, so I might have a sketch and some rough color comps.

MIKECORRIERO---> Much appreication dood! Cool to hear that you like the work and the design. I probably spent equal time work on both aspects. Of course I wanted to push the designs futher, but there are always limits/bountries that cannot be crossed on such a big franchise.

Back one more time,

Summer Pudding---> It was really cool meeting and talking with you in Montreal at the workshop. My head is still kinda spining from everything.

GNL---> I have tons more work to post, but will have to await until my artbook is release. Oh yes, it's coming out this year.

Charlie 2.0---> Thanks dood. For each cover I spent a lot of time thinking about lighting and creating a sense of mood.

As for showing off the other two full covers, that will have to wait until they are printed. Oh well, but here is something else. This is an insight on how the first cover evolved. This image below shows how many changes the cover went thru before one was agreed upon. Each one of these were roughed in and fully painted. It take me more time to do this, but makes life easier when everything is spelled out so when I hand in the final... there is usually no need for revisions.

dope ! There's an interesting composition in your first attempt though. You have a strong eye for volumes and color placement. Can't wait to see your art compiled in a book

Living Rope---> I owe you a big email update! So far, the cool thing about working on these covers is the ability to really play around with different compositions... and of course... go thru TONS of iterations. In the end, I think it's allowing me to grow and improve(fingers crossed). I always appreciate your thoughts

se7en_---> Hey! Yeah, I rarely talk about my digital work with people simply because I never think it directly relates with concept art. It's my side passion and my dirty secret. For these covers, I took all my own photos except for Boba Fett which Lucas supplied a number of sources images to reference.

BTW...everybody.... JS and I have a book coming out this year. As soon as it is off to the printers, I will definintely post a new thread showcasing the pages and new art.

I gotta tell ya man. I was at work today and I saw a student reading this book. I was like " I know this picture....oh crap that's Bomba's!" It's really fun to see something on this site, and then see it in real life attatched to something tangable. Nice stuff man.

Hi Jason,
It's cool to finally see this cover you've talked about in Montreal.
Your different thumbnails are really interesting.
I love the dark feeling (the dramatic light) on the final one.

Cheers !

I like these alot, because they portray the more old school traditional star wars. The newer star wars is just too new, but anyway thats another thread.
For some reason the concept with the blue saber reminds me of tom cruise.

Just curious whats it like working for a book publisher? or are these just tests?
Is it hard to get a steady income in this area of work? Im sorry for my ignorance but I know bugger all about books lol.

Thanks.

Rich.

Salvaged Teaser

synthetINK---> It's been awhile since we last talked. You've been doing some killer stuff! I do not know how you are able to create so much detail... very consistant.

Hookswords---> That is awesome! I was walking thru the Borders yesterday and saw the book when I entered the store. I still get a kick when I see it in print let alone someone reading the book.

PeterLee---> Thank you.

Aleksi---> THanks man!!! Just a quickie question for you... what is your favorite part of an illustration? The quick sketch? THumbnailing? Or finalizing? I really enjoy the thumbnailing aspect the most on these covers.

Mr Man---> Old school? Yeah, now you are talking! THe cool thing is that Lucas/Random House approached me because of the mood I create. A BIG part of that is the way that I utilize textures in unconventional ways. ANd, to me, Star Wars was all about used/grit/industrial. These are all actual covers and you can find the 1st cover in Borders. Go look and see! To answer your last question, yes... getting steady cover gigs is very difficult.

Pixeldragoon---> Thanks!

romance---> Nice to meet you as well! Keep up the great work.

cognition.sb---> Thanks man. I'm looking foward to revealing more work when I can.

Lastly, here is a quick teaser at my new art book titled 'Salvaged'. It's going to be 132 pages of painting and photography. I did all of the artwork, our very own JS Rossbach created the design, and Rick Berry has written the introduction. I'll be posting more pages in another thread soon! I'm also taking pre-orders thru my website incase anybody is interested in securing a copy:

I'm curious, what was your art brief or art direction like for the betrayal cover...what did they ask for?
