Hmm, I have uncool tastes it seems.
Da Vinci- yup
Flake: Wow that's sad. And that from "leading art schools" ?...
Georges de la Tour - nope
van Rijn Rembrandt - yes (whew!)
Jean-Léon Gérome - nope
Roy Lichtenstein - nope (considering who's in there I thought...)
Banksy's there ? wow.
the fact that 19th century got 4% tells me to stop right there. No Sargent is shocking actually. I can understand that Waterhouse isn't going to stand a chance, but that's plain weird. We gave the boss his due at my school.
Actually Roy Lichtenstein is there... they spelled his name wrong. Not that I'm thrilled by that.
I'm glad Rembrandt is there... figured he's still a gimmee even today, and really glad to see Franz Hals on the list too. But I'm bummin' that Howard Pyle, NC Wyeth and Mucha didn't make the list.
May I reccomend:
The Art Renewal version of most popular artists...

I'm not even going to get started on Duchamp.
The ArtRenewal top 10 has a greater majority of romantic artists, mostly Victorian. The 'Art Newspaper' list is more avant-garde (read: up its own arse) I suppose, but all lists like this are completely subjective. What I find amusing is the 'who we asked' bit. Loads of London Art Colleges, and oh, a few from the stix to keep the plebs happy. And how some people voted for the artists' personality rather than the art.
Personally I don't have a problem with Duchamp, but then I also like artists like Yves Tanguy and he doesn't make the either list... unsuprisingly! It is amazing there are virtually none, if any of the Pre-Raphaelites in the list. I actually wonder what art history consists of these days?
Ok, I'm glad I'm not the only one who was boggled by the fact that Duchamp was the top of the list -- and I'm not even an art student. It just seemed an effete answer to me.
My favorites aren't even dead yet
Whelan and Lacoste
But honestly, Caspar David Friedrich is just
It's all opinion anyway when you think about it. *shrug*
But, Paul McCartney was on the list too, that makes me go o.O
“It is enough that we set out to mold the motley stuff of life into some form of our own choosing; when we do, the performance is itself the wage.”
"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed." ~Albert Einstein
After looking at the list of names, I believe they basically gave the 350 students a piece of paper and told them to list 50 names. Threw all the lists into a data crunching program and generated the list with the names that appeared most often at number 1 position. Because "Shigeru Miyamoto" is in there somewhere - as well as paul mccartney.
I don't mean to knock Damian Hirst, but if he comes in at 19 then that kinda dilutes the "quality" of the list. He is more of a sensationalist than an artist. His stuff are cool, but more to shock than anything to do with actual drawing and painting skills.
There are 3 sides to every story. Yours, mine and THE TRUTH.
how is philip guston that high up? i don't utterly dislike him, but 6???!?
damien hurst...one of the most pathetic, self-congratulating, pretentious, mundane, false, unimaginative and over-rated artists of all time.
jack vettriano....psshhhh, please c'mon. pretty bits of crap with nothing to them, belonging in cheap hotels.
duchamp...that's just great. have an anti-artist as the most influential artist of our time. classic.
meh, well time to move on, let them all do their thing, 85% won't do any art after they leave art school
edit:just to clarify, i'm not one of those people who hates all things modern/conceptual etc at all. i'm not a little arc minion. i like art from nearly all movements, just some artists are laughable within them.
wow...i really like these two and he surely isnt on that list ? the link doesn`t seem to work for meOriginally Posted by Goog
Oh my god, you are saying that this list is not made by Conceptart.org people? Guess what, that could be true. It could be that the people they asked have a different view then the average Conceptart.org member.
They could probably critisize your lists as easily as you do theirs but with different arguments and opinions. Just because it says art school doesn't mean that it has to be restricted on the stuff that the Conceptart.org crowd thinks of as good and inspirational.
They could have asked people who think that ArtRenewal and a bunch of losers who are living in the past.
If you ask a parent, a student, and a millionaire what car is the best for them then you can be sure to get three different opinions.
Cool.... Jesus Christ and composer Randy Newman made the list!... In your face Mozart and Satan!!!..
But Lars Von Trier?... C'mon!?!... Dogville looks boring...
LONG LIVE YOKO KANNO!!!
Those guys deserve death.
Oh, wait. They voted for al those "hip n cool" guys.
They're dead already
