Julianna's Dad replies
I am sooo glad you are sketching again. I was getting worried that life would consume you and bury your first love: art. This is some good stuff alright, and I am glad others are encouraging you as well.
These sketches are tight yet loose all at the same time. I think with more practice your hand will become more proficient and your lines will become more efficient (which means simpler). Less erasing (not that that is bad, I use one, too) but just that the lines go down easily because the hand knows where and how to create them because it is experienced. Somewhat like a singer: when they first start out their voice is tight, but the more they sing, the more beautiful it gets because it gets used and practiced.
I look forward to that with you. I love seeing talent developed.

Hey there Julia,
Very nice linework, and your shading style is very comfortable to read. Keep it up, and i hope to see more expressions.
I look forward to seeing more, especially more portraits.

These are great. Nice shading, I don't know how you people get such finesse out of that brutal bludeoning pencil. I'd like to see what you can do without a ref.... you need to practice your imagination too!

the bottom one is classy.

I like your method for rendering shadow on skin, it makes it look rough but you get the values down well. I like your studies, but i think you should take on the challenge of drawing the full figure from head to toe. The first one in post #4 was the one that improessed me the most, and it is the closest to a full figure. Keep up the good work.

Yeah thats a good point working solidly on the head has its good points, but working on some figure drawing would help. Hands and bodies are very expressive. The first two drawings from your second post show that, a lot more involvement for the viewer. =)
Good work! Nice job on the update. Keep going back to that scanner!

Nice update. Really considered and interesting piece. Those hands are awesome =) Well done!
Btw, what sort of type of things do you like to draw or want to draw?
September 27th, 2006, 11:29 PM
hey, what kind of ref are you srawing these from?
September 29th, 2006, 12:32 PM
Right now, I'm trying to focus more on figure drawing. I like drawing people mostly I guess.. but I would like to start drawing environments and other things soon.
Here is an update.
September 29th, 2006, 07:50 PM
Good good How long do you spend on these if you don't mind me asking?
September 30th, 2006, 06:41 AM
I like this one, great update.
Just some minor crits:
The girl on the right, the thumb on her right hand seems a bit too high or out of place to the plane of the hand. I really like those fingers though.
Her chin needs a bit of sorting too, but I guess you noticed that one hehe.
Looks as if her ear is too high, maybe thats just the way she is. Keep going =D

Very nice drawings - solid stuff.
Keep it up!

Yes, you're right about the figure on the right. I was kinda lazy with it..
Here's something new.
