Painting Dump

Hey everyone,

Thought I'd drop a few things since I haven't posted lately. A few of the paintings I've posted before, but I got some better pics so I thought I'd put those up again. They all vary in size from 9x9 inches to 20x30 inches and all are all in oil- some on panel some on linen. Most of these will be in a show coming up in Sept. at John Pence in San Francisco. Anyway, Hope you enjoy.

On another note, I'm going to start teaching traditional drawing and painting starting very, very soon. Possibly as soon as the beginning of July. It will focus on atelier-style training- cast drawin', figure drawin', paintin', etc. I will only be taking a limited number of students so if there are any of you in the San Francisco area who are interested contact me as soon as possible at javalina33@yahoo.com and I'll get back to you with all the details.

Hope to see you guys in Montreal next month.

They're all beautiful, Carl, but those twilight cityscapes are on a whole other level. Any chance of seeing some west coast versions?

If you all are looking for Art training, Carl is one of the best teachers you will find. He was specifically hired here at Massive Black to help bring up the foundation skills of our art staff company wide. He is getting great results with those who are studying with him. If you want to learn to paint and also learn from someone who is finding commercial success with both their Fine Art and as a concept designer, this is a great opportunity for you. He truly is an excellent teacher. His education credentials are amazing...nine years of traditional art training, an MFA from New York Academy of FIgurative Art, a BFA from Ringling, and his certificate from Waterstreet Atelier. You wont do much better than that...He has taught me a lot too.

Great stuff Carl. Truly. For those that dont know...i have a couple of carls images from back when he and i were first learning to draw and paint. Maybe someday I could post em up!! haha....just kidding carl!

photos flatten and distort life...true life paintings are a result of understanding how the eye actually sees and being able to give an honest interpretation...it takes years of study..it is more than just copying what you see as well. Photos see on one plane. Sight involves spacial and focal "fall off" because we have TWO eyes and not just one lens (unless you are a pirate). The eyes see on multiple planes and light interacts in the eyes on a much more subtle and beatiful way than any camera ever could.

if there is one thing you could learn from carl it is how to develop your understanding of what you see...not to mention a rich understanding of process, art history, and narrative in paintings.

Actually, a "pros post their crappy student work" thread might be cool. I was just going through a bunch of my high school work in my mother's attic the other day...

Beautiful work Carl. I love them all. The landscapes have a wonderful peace to them and the still lifes have so much atmosphere. I love the portrait of the girl with the stockings. Thank you for posting. I always look foward to seeing your work.

You bastard!

Hey, btw, I really enjoyed the drinkfest on friday. Discussions with you are great. Here in SF you end up talking all kinds of esoteric bullshit with people, that rarely is of any value for real life. It's good to know that you are one of the few peeps here whose brain works on logic.
And another thing is, you taught me a ton throughout the last six months. Thanks for that.
Hm, and one last thing...you are a hell of a friend.

Thanks Dobsky,
for everything

Assuming the cityscape paintings are from life, how do you deal with changing clouds and position of the sun as you paint? Especially in these ones you've posted, the entire mood of the piece and all is dependant on the way the skies are.

These are fantastic! I love the depth in them. It almost feels as if I could shove myself through the frame and land inside those scenes!

If you ever make it down to sandiego (or me to frisco) I guarantee you a student....me

all of these pieces display staggering technique, but what really gets me is the emotion in the city/sky images. they're incredibly melancholic and serene. beautiful stuff.
