Wasp More Prince of Persia 3 concepts-vyle (edit_02:steps page 1)

Following Viag's post, here is part of the work I did on prince of persia 3 at Ubisoft Montreal. There is a bit of everything from environments, to characters, to marketing illustrations (when there was no more concepts to do...).
I arrived kinda late on the project, but still had the chance to work close to amazingly influencial artists, and especially the concept guys.
Working daily next to sparth , viag, barontieri, vermiis and hydropix was probably the most influencial thing that ever happened to me.
When I arrived I had to follow the tracks that some of those guys had laid out (especially following artists like Vermiis for the characters was quite a challenge! The same goes for viag and hydropix, who made me feel at home very quickly on the project, thanx guys).

Here are some environments, most of them modelled in Max7 using polytools, to facilitate the process of having to do more than one illustration per environment (and make sure the scales and proportions were the same, eventhough I had to render different angles). It also gave me a fairly good lighting to start with (either with Vray or Mental ray). I will post some of those renders soon, if you are interested with the process.

Characters:
did not have to do much character work (since that over talented bastard vermiis had already done everything!) but it was very enjoyable nonetheless.

And some marketing stuff (most were never used too...)

Posing of farah using the model created by the cinematic guys in XSI

Paintover photoshop CS

Sandprince XSI:

Paintover Photoshop CS (yeahh, I know very shiny... But gotta do what marketing want )

That's it for now (sorry about the heavy download). If you are interested to see the steps of any of those images, I have everything and can post them.
EDIT>> Monday 12/05
Here are some steps, I'll try to post as many as possible this week

EDIT>> Wednesday 12/07

tips?

Hi Vyle, thanks for posting these fantastic pieces

I have one question for you... what would you say had the biggest impact on improving your work recently? i guess what i'm asking is, can you think of a technique that you tried, or any knowledge you gained that really marked a milestone in your artwork....
just looking for tips ;P especially in your environments and even more specifically as relating to how you visualize the lighting and then go about developing a space through dark and light masses, highlights and colors

thanks again!
regards,
raúl

Those are fantastic!
If you would post the steps it would be really great.
How do you do the textures on the walls (probably a stupid question but I don't have much experience using photoshop ).

thanks guys for the kind comments

Dan>> Once again, coming from you it is a huge honour, we constantly surf your site here at ubi, it has been a great inspiration for all of us. I had not been on CA this month and just saw your last post, none else can render such living/dynamic images like you do.

RCabrales>> One of the biggest thing I learned (which I knew but could not do earlier on for geographic reasons), is that the only way to evolve faster when you reach a stage you can't seem to pass, is to UNITE with other artists. I know that's pretty much what we all do on forums like here, but it is the first time I was amongst such a pool of talent. The only thing that can kill talent is oversized ego (oh and laziness too ), and since all the artists here are very humble, we spend all our time exchanging techniques, mixing them, criticise and advice each other.
When you are painting, and over your shoulder, regularly you have a guy like Barontieri or Sparth passing and say: "hey, if you'd do that, you might be able to balance this....", or if I have no inpiration one day, and chat to Viag who was sitting next to me for few months, or talk about metaphysics with Hydropix, it makes the usual lonely artist's life suddenly much more livable.... And you see your work through different eyes, and start to approach it in different ways.
When it comes to lighting and environments and composition, Sparth and Hydropix are masters at that, and more than learning specific things, they just made me realize how important it is.
So, in one word: artists MUST unite to get better. The lonely artists days are dead, and I am happy about it. (do I sound like mother Theresa or what?)

Seems you were a bunch of concept guys working on that game, amazing stuff, great mood and very nice designs. It would be very nice to see some process... great armor designs you have here, awesome masks and helmets.

You just have to convince the other concept guys to post more work about this game! 5 stars work Vyle.

Thanks for sharing, very inspiring!

Wow.

Now, I was a big fan a few years ago on that other forum, but the amount of improvement since then is absolutely insane. I am in absolute awe of these. Each one is full of visual gems, but bound together so sweetly that it's a little like music.

Just... wow.

Fantastic stuff Vyle. Curious, how long did you have to work on each of these? hours, days? what's the average turnaround per week for this type of work?

I totally agree with your words VYLE. Ego is the worst thing...and working with other artist's can benefit each other in so many ways.
I'm interested in seeing the 3d renders and process! Please post em!
And where are you working now? Still in montreal?
