New Comix

It's been quite some time since I posted. I'm starting some new comix projects in my off hours with BOOM! studios. The first is called Jeremiah Harm written by Kieth Giffen, being pencilled by an amazing talent Rael Lyra. I'm designing characters and doing covers.

www.boom-studios.com

I'll probably pimp these guys whenever I can because it's an indy pub that is truly about creator owned projects and if any of you out there are aspiring to make comic books you should send your portfolios to Ross Richie. You can blame him for getting me to make comic books again.

The other Zombie piece is actually my own series called Condition Dead I'm doing with my long time friend and sometimes writer Dave Davis of CHUD (the website not the movie) fame.

More stuff to come

Awesome. I'll be keeping an eye for when it hits the shelves, can't wait to read it.
I was actually wondering some months back if you were ever going to post here again. I'm going to step out of line here and be assuming, when I say that you must get this a lot, but OINK was the best damn comic I read in my life, fuck its one of the best stories I've ever witnessed. And the visuals were up to par with the story itself.

It seems surreal that I'm even writting to you, you are one of my idols.
Just wanted to say thank you for OINK, and that you fucking rock man.
I'll be waiting for your new comic.

EDIT: I was talking about your new comic Condition Dead, but I'm going to pick up the other comic you're working on as well.

I like the texture detail you threw into these John, glad to see some new works. It was a treat being able to look over you're shoulder during the Warthog days. Say hello to Tommy and Spitler for me. -James

always good to see new work from you. I really like the gritty textures in the first one and I'm surprised that I actually feel som empathy for the zombie!

pretty cool. ya know, looking at this makes me wonder, why do badasses get to have the cigars? sure it makes them look tough and all, but how about a different vice that isnt played to often? how about an alcoholic? Or heroine! thats somthing you dont see every day. or something a bit more different like chewing tabacco.

i think heroine would be good though ("ya ok, im gonna come in and kill ya all, just as soon as i shoot up!")

Broken spirit: It's weird ya know working in games has been an extraordinary experience for me, but I pretty much owe everything I have to comics because 10 years ago I did a book about a pissed off pig and people still ask me about it today- that blows my brains out that people remember it as kindly as they do. As I get older I realize how fortunate I was to have the opportunity to do Oink. It opened so many doors for me and I often wish I could go back and do it again, but I'm so humbled that anyone remembers the series and I just have so much gratitude for the whole thing- thank you.

Jabberwookie: Bad-asses have to smoke cigars it's a heroic vice. Heroine..eh..it's sort of frowned upon in most circles

JBradford: It was a pleasure to work with you as well James! Say hi to Ben for me.

Vigostar: I publish where I can have freedom. It's just easier with my schedule because I work a full time gig during the week...dare I say it's almost a hobby.

El Coro: I'm keeping it real...yo...as real as I can.

I've had a few false starts with getting back to my roots, but this one feels right. I'm newly married and that's put such a different perspective on my life in such a suprising way. I never would have predicted how profoundly it is changing me, but I'm making new art and stories all the time now it's great.

Hi John

I've been a big fan of your work for sometime so It's nice to see some of your newer stuff. Your eye for texture and detail is crazy and something I've strived to incorporate into my own work. Do you still work in games at all? Did any of those game projects from your site ever see the light of day - they looked pretty interesting. Anyways, I can't wait to see more stuff from you - keep rockin it.

This book is going to be ridiculously fun for me.

I should mention the book is being written by my long time friend...like we used to chase each other in the woods kind of long time...Dave Davis who is a fantastic writer of all things pulpy. He's sort of the man about town over at www.chud.com

Alti: I'm actually finding a pretty warm reception for the book with the distributors I've spoken to so it looks like I'll probably be putting it through Norma in Europe and I'll list it with Diamond so I imagine that your shop could order it for you.

I think a good zombie story always has a place in the world.

good composition in that page, I really like how the shadows in the woman's panels create the edges of the zombies face. The glamour shots in the first two panels really push the contrast between the "love boat" and "zombie brain eaters" genres.

Splat! new page I'm using a lot more reference than I ever have, which is good for this kind of story, but every now and then I do get the urge to just go fucking haywire, but it wouldn't fit with the overall vibe of the book. I wish I had ten hands I got so much stuff I want to do right now.

hope ya dig

That is freakin BAD-ASS! I love it. Nice dark images. The thing that kind of bothers me is the consistancy in the style of your comic. It goes from photo real to a more stylized realism/comic book style. Which is probably because you said you have been using more refereces than you ever have before. But other than that, I think its pretty sweet. Looking forward to seeing more.

The forum really helps for inspiration N8. Seeing young studs like yourself and Coro always get me jazzed.

JP what are you doing here- get back to work you lazy bastard - wait till you show some of that creature shit dude- omg It's just an amazing inspiring body of work.

All the nice things are really appreciated. I know sometimes these forums can seem a little too congratulatory at times. Like everybody likes this stuff, but it's really encouraging so if ya'll are just being nice then I won't complain.

You can be honest with me when I get to page 48

I really like these pages. As a sequential art major they are very inspiring. Now I must ask, how much reference do you use exactly? I've noticed that many artisits like Ben Templesmith and even more mainstream Marvel guys will use straight photographs (digitally altered to blend of course) instead of re-drawing. At first this really bothered me because at my school (SCAD) we have to hand copy any elements (since we just turn in pencilled and/or inked pages usually). Now I'm sure you're a talented draftsman in your own regard and I believe that many of the figures were freehanded or so heavily altered that they are truly your own. However it's fairly obvious that you painted over a photo of the cruise ship and especially the background of the last page, with the cars parked and the buildings. So I guess my question is how much reference do you use and how long does each page take considering you can kinda skip over drawing backgrounds entirely.

PS- I don't mean to bash you as the final product is all that matters nowadays, not really the method of creation.
