In a way it makes sense.
But then again, it sounds an awful lot like another excuse for fatties. Even if its true, DONT GIVE OBESE PEOPLE ANOTHER THING TO BLAME EXEPT THEMSELVES!
"Im not fat because i lie on the couch all day eating takeout pizza, drinking coke and play xbox, im fat because el coro left his "signatures" all over my Neighborhood, both on walls and on the sidewalk."
lol, the premise for blaming graffiti is kinda funny. However, its obvious people will get less exercise and eat worse foods when depressed. It doesn't even have to be a noticeable depression; the environment can just lower your mood a little and over time can have ill effects on you.
fun read, anyhow.

Could it be also that graffiti, excessive litter and lack of green spaces tend to be most prevalent in low-income urban areas than in middle to high income areas? Healthy food is more expensive than junk, and people who don't make a lot of money would have a hard time affording it, thus they would tend to be larger people.
I think that makes more sense, though I guess people not wanting to walk around because it's ugly outside could be a factor too. If you consider graffiti on the whole ugly anyway. If it's any good, it's nice to look at. Litter and lack of green are much worse.
What about green graffiti, then?
if fatties were to DO graffiti theyd lose weight. All that running around spray painting, running from cops, thats some good exercise.
I was thinking the same. I love train rides into NYC because of all the graffiti along the mountain sides and such. People put a lot of time into it, and a lot of them look really cool.Originally Posted by Tully
I used to date a girl in the city, so I would visit every weekend, at one point I took photos of as much graffiti as I could. Too bad this is not a appreciated artistic style; some of it is really amazing, and not just a logo.

Oh Bugger, i'm responcible for making people fat? (this is british research after all)
I'm gonna make some nice healthy stencils tommorrow!
damn straight! I'm probably getting 'unhealthily' thin from running and stressfully spraying.if fatties were to DO graffiti theyd lose weight. All that running around spray painting, running from cops, thats some good exercise.
Sounds fun! All the celebrities will be doing it next!Originally Posted by Hayabusa
There's more to it than just the uglyness, in some neighborhoods people are actually scared to go out after dark or to go jogging alone. People in low income areas sometimes can't afford to go to the gym either or do some sports that require more equipment (rock climbing, ski...)
Well everyone... here is your chance to make more fat people...
Yeah, just seeing litter and dog mess gives me the munchies Maybe it could be that people who live in graffiti prone areas live in apartments and areas with no yards to mow, or take care of and don't get as much excersise. Then again, I live in a very green area and there's plenty of fat people around here; no graffiti either."Conversely, in less attractive areas, those with lots of graffiti, litter and dog mess, people are more likely to be overweight or obese and to take less exercise,"
If this makes you hungry…
…then what does this do to cops?
I still think a lot of it has to do with the food that people eat and what goes into that food that makes people eat. With that said...
"HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IS PEOPLE!!!"
healthy people love food.
overweight people love eating.
anorexic people hate eating.
bulemic people hate food.
the rest are either force fed into fatness, or starved against their will into skinny-ness.
that's one theory/hypothesis anyway.
you can find different folks that rest between the extremes....and if the theory holds, the physical appearance will manifest....proportionately...hahaha
Encouragement keeps me swimming , even in the undertow of disappointment.
naw dawgs they got it wrong, graffiti makes you PHAT.
It makes sense, yes, but in reality, it probably has little to no impact on whether on how active most people are. Healthy people wont start eating more because they live around graffiti; Fat people aren't gonna start eating less because their lawn is greener. It's all a state of mind..

"People who live in more pleasant and attractive environments, which in our study was assessed by levels of greenery, are much more likely to be physically active and not to be overweight or obese,"
hmm.. i have a few probs with this study... theyve assessed peoples weight in relation to their aesthetic surroundings, but have missed the point. have you noticed the distinct lack of fast food outlets in green areas? thats mainly because small country towns with minimal development have perhaps one or two shops to get fatty foods. that, and the population in ugly places (ie, the city) is at much higher numbers than that of the smaller, prettier towns. theyve made the link between graffiti and cities, but how does a few pictures contribute to obesity figures? duh..
"Conversely, in less attractive areas, those with lots of graffiti, litter and dog mess ,people are more likely to be overweight"
Are they going to start blaming dogs now for overweight people, we can add that to the list. Coming from a small town in the mountains I can say that there are just as many overweight people ratio wise as there are in the city, with or without the fastfood and the graffiti and litter. I think over production of food and latenight tv, might want to look into that as well as the dogs and the cats.
Man what will they get away with next . My old room mate was overweight . She would try loseing it but never did all she did was blame everyhing for not loseing waight. When i see overweight people blameing something else for ther wight problem i just want to take them by the hand and then send them to camp. dont get me wrong i dont have overweight people . I just hate it when they start blameing everything else for there problems.
