Tensai- that is amazing! Not to take anything away from this drawing, or your efforts, but this reminds me of the types of puzzles you would see in the mid-eighties. I love this and could look at it for hours. Great work. Must have been fairly painstaking, but I bet your pretty pleased with it. Now, how about some color?!? C'mon, don't get lazy on us!

Thanks Jason, I've send you an email.

Yoonjin, thanks for the crit. About textures, I start out with a big brush and then define more and more going down in brush scale as i render the texture. You can try custom brushes, sometime its easier and it saves time.

tensai, very cool. I loved explore those type of drawings when I was a kid.
Patrick, looks good.
Balistic your colours and light is always spot on.

kidcrucial - yeah took quite a while to just do the line work. thats also why i basically colored it with three values. otherwise it would have taken me months..

MeArOne - glad you like it..

LeejeN218 - love that first one.

Pringle - very impressive. love your atmosphere and compositions man. and the way you keep m a bit rough.

here are a couple from a quick design i did a couple of years ago when i was graduating in tokyo. its a city hanging upside down, over another city. the space between 'uptown' and 'downtown' was to be mad crowded and metropolic, with buildings amd neons hanging down.

on top of everything you would have a big empty space - sort of like a giant roofterrace / parc in the city. the drawings are abit basic, more to show design than convey mood...

try to upload some more recent work later.

if its too much ill remove some of them..
or i could upload some of the construction priciples i did...

LeejeN218: you study under feng zhu!? awww man, you're really lucky.

i'm self studying with his dvds. at the risk of it looking like utter crap with all the work on this thread... here it is:

sketched and painted in painter ix, around 1hr. tried to apply feng's principles of scale and stuff in close up to put the viewer right into the shot.

gotta start from the somewhere. it's usually from the bottom!

this thread is so damn cool...
another 2 concepts, the first one is really old already, some of you might have seen this before somewhere :-P
It's a marker render btw.

this one is a panel taken from my manga short that will be published in Germany soon:

no ref. used on both.

Hey Dragonspit! Cool, you're here, too.
Yes, I'd like to post some of the Starsiege stuff as well... :-P

Damn guys- this is turning into one hell of a thread.

Hideyoshi- Old or not, I love that first one!

Prinlge- The thing I love about your work is the amount of strength and power in your compositions. Like in the last one you posted- I would have never have been bold enough to force the perspective to lean in like you did, but it works so damn well. How do you know when you can get away with that and when you cannot?

Alright, I wasn't going to post this because it's in progress but the coolness of this thread keeps going way up... Here is a pretty generic castle. I'll put a city on that far hillside when I have time.
Deadlines come first...

Deryk- hang in there man. Drawing all the time, is the fastest way to the next level.

nice work stewart one! love the last one...that's straight out of a fantasy movie man. really great.

Jeff Nentrup - i take my hat off to that castle. the way it's placed and lighted in the shot is just perfect. and yeah i keep drawing everyday. my eyes are actually red from doing too many environment practice sketches on my tablet. hehe they're gonna have to pry me away from my laptop to get me to do anything else. all this is causing my programming skills to lag way behind. :p

superb and marvelous work everybody!
Dallas' and Pringle's stuff makes me want to try out some crazy perspectives.
and stewart one's towers have some damn impressive brush strokes and colors.

Here's my latest piece, inspired by this thread-
(Some of the mountain textures provided by my good artist friend Jeff Rose)

Really great stuff guys! Love it all, a question to everyone, where do you all get the ideas for creating such highly detailed environments. Look through magazines, or what..just wondering.

Pringle nice work again

Stewart one, you have some very good work!

Jeff Nentrup, you just inspire me tooo much man! I wish i could learn from you. Do you have any tuts....

Thanks a lot Justin. There is a lot of inspiring stuff in this thread for me too. I'm trying to figure out how these guys get the Craig Mullens look myself...

I don't have any tutorials put together although that is something I'd like to add to my site down the road. I primarily use Painter 9 but always have Photoshop running for transforms, filters and the amazing file browser. As far as technique most of my method comes from oil painting from models, outdoors and some from photos.
Digitally I tend to design on the fly because it's so easy to make changes. I studied with Ryan Church for 14 weeks or so while at Art Center and picked up a lot of his habits, check out the DVD's on his site if you haven't already. He breaks it down really well.

I'll see if i can put up some work in diffrent stages soon. I'll let you know when that happens. Hopefully my clients will let me show some of my more recent work as well.

Cheers.
