pencil update, please!
pencil update, please!
Your work is sick!! The raptor piece is simply incredible man. Keep it up, update update!
I used to reply to you and vice versa a lot around 2007 haha. Since then Ive disappeared and you carried on solid over here. Fantastic evolution! Funny I thought you were going towards artsy type of work but you went down the concept art route. no complaints just an observation Anyways Im back so Ill keep on checking your work.
Woah LOOOONG overdue update. Sorry for disappearing yet again.
So since September I've been working at a small game company in Toronto working on casual games. My job has primarily been painting in-game background and character assets.
Been busy in a lot of ways, lazy in even more. I have some stuff I can show from work, I'll have even more to share in a few weeks. Personal work has been lacking, which is something i really need to change asap...
I have been doing a fair bit of sketching, doodling, getting reacquainted with watercolours and shit. Haven't scanned everything yet, but I hope i get to doing more soon.
First off, work stuff, in-game backgrounds.
Personal stuff, reworked a few pieces based on criticism i got at Illuxcon.
Digi painting i dont feel like finishing
ThomasM - Thanks, yeah I've been trying to think about structure and perspective more in earlier stages of my paintings rather than fixing shit after I already mess it up.
KingKostas - Thanks dude!
Beelow - Thanks for the kind words and crits. Really should've shot some reference for that painting...
Lateman - Thanks!
Holland - Thanks for the kind words!
RecklessProvider - Hey Parker thanks!
PHATAndy - Thanks dude! You're right with the crits...there is a lot wrong with the painting, i really made no preplanning where I needed it... I dont think its worthwhile to come back to it and repaint a huge amount of the painting... I might come back when I feel like I can do a real good job fixing it up.
a la bapsi - Thanks!
Aveh - Yeah I guess it went pretty quickly. Painting tends to go quickly for me when I'm inspired and not sleeping
surus - here you go sir, sorry its disappointing, been only doodling and not thinking about pencils recently
jneumann - Thanks!
marioucci - Hey thanks, yeah its funny, I wasn't too sure I'd end up where I am now either.
GreenSock Sir you beast! Was great looking through your new stuff, very inspiring, especially the sketches. That gouache painting is great I think some of your more rendered pieces lose something that is in your sketches or quicker paintings, which is a shame. I wish I could point out exaclty what i mean
the in game backgrounds are sweet. how long did it take you to do one of those?
great sketchbook too. the feet in a few of your characters are off in size (here and here), but are planeted well. got to remember the face from chin to top of forehead is the foot size, unless of course you're adding hobbit feet to a character. lol
keep it up! great stuff coming from this sb.
You never disappoint.
Great work man. The game backgrounds are very good, they show your versatility as an artist.
My only gripe would be perspective, its seems a little out in some of the interiors. Pretty good otherwise though. keep up the hard work!
I havent visited your sketchbook for a long while. Very succesful progress. There's still lots of freedom and experimentation in your sketchbook and at the same time you're doing much more finished stuff. Game backgrounds look really good. The one with the tree is my favourite.
great update! I love it when someone returns with a bang to CA. I like the sketches and am looking forward to seeing some of these watercolours you have done (if you are going to post them that is).
The game stuff is looking great, as others have said. No crits, just thanks for all the useful tips in my own sketchbook!
Thanks for updating with pencil pages!
Been a while. Sorry. Been busy with work primarily. Sometimes it's been fun, most of the time I miss the free painting time of unemployment.
Quick n dirty update of recent portfolio work. Some stuff from work, some stuff for shits and giggles.
surus - no problem, glad you liked em. I have tons more but i despise scanning sketchbooks nowadays, sorry
kingkostas - thanks, guess I disappeared again though
Thomas - Thanks! I have lots of stuff to scan and not the patience to do it. Maybe Ill motivate myself to do it one day and then dump watercolours and pencils again.
Farvus - Thanks for the kind words!!
Andy - Thanks, means a lot! Im obviously quite dumb with perspective, I eyeball too much and dont notice the glaring issues until Im done with it... I like painting interiors and backgrounds now though, so its something to work on...
Parsakoira - Thanks!!
MattGamer - Thanks, the backgrounds are generally 2-3 days for each one, so about 14-21 hours of painting. In those particular characters the feet weirdness was intentional, most of the time i dont have that excuse though!
Malakuko - Thanks, I agree completely that my finished work sucks ass, I've been experimenting and struggling with getting the right look to my work for some time now... still havent figured out a method and look that makes me happy.
Stuff is looking sick as always. I have to admit that even though your paintings are continually improving I always have way more fun wading through all your pencil sketches. It reminds me of the good ol' days. I'm terrible at keeping sketchbooks anymore. Most of my loose papers just end up in the trash or scattered between my home and work. Need to pick that up again. You can tell you're having fun and staying loose. I really admire that stuff!
The environment paintings are rocking too. Loads of atmosphere and I'm really digging your eye for color. Sometimes they do feel a bit too busy. Like in the cave painting with all the crystals and what not. I feel like my eye doesn't know where to rest. Your character paint ups are rockin' too. Sometimes they come out a little bit stiff after your coat of paint. I know that with time you'll bring that same loosness from your sketchbook into your finished paintings as well.
No real crits, per se. But hopefully some encouragement at least is helpful! I'm so proud of how you've grown dude! You put me to shame! Ha! Keep it going!
Wow, I somehow missed the last two updates here! You are getting reeeaaaallly good man!
Your lighting is excellent and I like how you are handling some more complex pieces. Gotta say, you are doing quite solid in your sketchbook with the pencils and watercolours!
I think a bit more attention to anatomy will help you out though. I'm not sure how much reference you are using, but the character concepts in the latest post for instance are really solid in terms of drapery and materials and lighting, yet look very stiff and the proportions are off in a number of places (not sure if some was meant to be intentional, but if it is I suggest either exaggerating the proportions more or making them more accurate as now they are stuck in that awkward space between the two). In other pieces like the skull in the latest post some more ref would help.
I also find it odd how your colours are inconsistent. You have some paintings in which they are absolutely fantastic and others look unnatural. I'd do more colour studies just to smooth things out more and get more comfortable with it.
Anyways, hope this helps, it's just a few thoughts I had while looking through your stuff. You are doing really great. You have to update more .
