Conventions... to attend, or not?

I'll try to get a discussion going in this languishing area...

Do any concept artists out there find any advantage in attending conventions such as E3 or GDC?

I have attended many comic book/fantasy art conventions where I have gotten some work by showing my portfolio to various studios, but is this a tactic that would work for concept artists? Does anyone have a success/failure story along these lines?
