This is the first illustration I did after the San Francisco workshop last weekend. It's for some RPG magazine.
The workshop was excellent, so many great artists. Justin Sweet gave me an invaluable critique of my portfolio. (anatomy! composition!) Good stuff.
So I listened to your feedback and reworked the image. I love blocking in a painting, but that last 15% of polish I really struggle with. How to finish my work?!!!

Really Nice !!!!. Just a question is he suppose to be looking at the dragons face?? If so open up the top lids of his eyes a little more. Unless he's going to be attacking his body.
Another thing about if he is looking at the dragons face or not. The head does appear to be behind him so if he was looking at the dragon it would look off but only subtle.
But this is only by my assumption if he's suppose to be looking at his head. So i apologize if I'm wrong.
I like this piece alot, it seems that alot of you guys learned a shitload at the workshop. I wish I could have gone .

I keep trying to use Painter but I have such a hard time making it do what I want, and I always end up back in Photoshop. Aaargh!

You're right, i should tip his head up and over a bit to be looking more at the dragon's head, but then he's too short to attack the head. Should he be looking at what he actually can hit - where he's aiming - or at the head? I guess it'd be more dramatic looking at the head.Originally Posted by Kresimir
The first piece has a good sense of atmosphere and markmaking. However the dark elves left leg (the closest one to the right hand edge of the paper) seems to be left behind. It needs to be pushed left back into the hip socket and twisted round towards the viewer slightly. Thats my 2 cents, enjoyed these pieces

Mat - very good point on the structure. i can see that leg can be tucked in more. actually i think the outer edge could come in a little more - not only is it too far out, it looks a little feminine. Sometimes when trying to push the action it's easy to "break" a figure's bones and limbs out of whack.
Here's another one. It's not done yet, I want to put some menacing creatures crawling down the wall behind her from the top right corner of the composition.

Those paintings are realy good!
The last is which I like most, though is not finished. It has a great atmosphere.
Couple crits about the first image:
The smoke on the dragon snout doesnt seem to come from It. Maybe some of the smoke covering a little part of his face would make it better.
If you add some colder colors, blue perhaps, in some place in the image ( in the farest background maybe ) could be a little more dinamic and intresting.

As sevencrows noted I have a really hard time "finishing" my work. I hate over-rendered images, I love artists like Justin Sweet, Jeffrey Jones, and N.C. Wyeth. They have a remarkable ability to put down just enough information to feel finished, yet leave enough to the imagination that the images seem to come to life.
Here's the finished image. It was for a card called the Pit of Sharnagga. I do a lot of collectable cards.
