Degenesis Chapter Illustrations

Hey guys, havent posted in here in a while...

A little while back, Marko asked me to work up 4 illustrations for the next Degenesis book... an expansion book focusing on the city of Justitian, and the people and happenings of the city.

Here are four drawings I worked up based on some of the themes and ideas Marko suggested to me for each particular chapter in the book.

These are all 9" x 12" ... all graphite, HB wooden pencil and .5 HB mechanical pencil.

No reference used on them, other than looking at Marko's work and style guides for general look and costuming. A handful of characters are based off some of the heads of the 100 major players of Justitian that Marko drew.

A group of adventures seeks out the mysteries of an ancient ruin buried beneath the earth, left behind from the time before Armageddon.

and a detail...

The city of Justitian is patrolled and watched over by The Judges. One must watch their step, for the out of line may be judged.

and a couple details..

In the bustling marketplaces of the city one can seek out a revelation of their fortune and future.

and a detail

Burn, a potent drug that allows one to grasp eternity, has been rooted out from the streets of Justitian. Those once consumed by the drug are left seeking its taste.

and a detail...

let me know what you guys think
-wes

awesome wes. Thanks for sharing. When is the book due out?

In the first, the foreground is pretty dark...I might have gone a little lighter on the front man...I could be wrong though. Stunning work.

You the man!

These are pretty nuts, I like everything accept the judge with the sunglasses, looks bit boy band-ish with the sunglasses down and the desperate eye brows. Its still a really cool image though. Crazy you didnt use any reference.

Call me impressed

I love seen finished pieces in pencil.

Great value ranges and textural element. Composition is also top notch.

Also, Kudos for conveying the drug trip so well - that's a tough one to have attempted.

Now for that one thing that keeps bugging me. Everytime I look at the piece with all the people gathered around the card reader/player. My eye keeps getting drawn to the girl kneeling in the center of the composition - specifically her left leg. Going by the details on the shinpad it appears the knee is pointed straight out of the picture plane, which means her thigh is running straight back in the picture plane. The problem is this would put her thigh dead center in her crotch as you have her seated. It looks very dislocated and seems to me the knee should be pointing more to the left or the whole shin moved to the right, backed by some foreshortened thigh.

Xia thinks I'm wrong, and I may well be, but my eyes cant leave it alone so somethings going on. I may just be misreading the armor.

Good job though I'd love to see more.

B

Friggin beautiful...

the one judge on the first horse has perfect weight. You can almost see his body bounce in mid stride, I love it.

Damn Wes. I just got home from work and this is the first thing I see.
Great job on capturing a very film like mood.
Also, great job on the chick with the flashlight. Her expression is great.

k ive been staring at these for the past half hour, cleaned up the drool on my keyboard, and ya, these are insane.

please say you used refs. if you didnt i think i may have to change my shorts again.

my fav is the fortune teller one. i also like how you showed a bit of markos style in all the pieces, yet retaining your own style. great job Wes. Cant wait to see you in San Fransico

Geeez, what can I say that can't already be said. It's great to see you on a project, and one that is familiar to us. I think I might have to color these for fun. I really think you should put these up in the New Media Coloring book. Another level of life could be added to them. Amazing Wes. Thanx

wes, you continue to improve. these are disgusting.. .and i mean that as really fucking sweet. the only crit i have is that on some of the pictures, my eye seems to jump around too much. maybe a more direct focus or focal point would help.. . .some of the elements compete with each other because you arent directing the viewers eye to any particular place.. ..though that may have been what youre going for. its strange to crit such incredible work, but i figured id give it a shot.

also, are you going to san fran? im thinking about going.. .it would be really cool to get to hang out with you again.

keep rockin out, buddy
