THUNDERDOME 8: Final Image thread

This is the thread where the final images for thunderdome 8 should be posted.

The due date is October 31st and will NOT be extended.

Please only post your final image in this thread. Only one image per user, and don't go apecrap with the image size....if you go over 1500pixels, i'll flip out and eat your head off....done it before.

Good luck guys!

new 'rule'(thanks fozzybar):
PLEASE POST A LINK TO AN IMAGE OR SITE IN RELATION TO THE CARTOON YOU ARE REDESIGNING.

We don't all know or remember the exacts of every cartoon so help us out. It could hurt your score when it comes to voting if the judges have no clue what it is you are redesigning.

JUDGING IS NOW IN PROGRESS

Here is my HE-MAN entry. I went all out, totally changed things around, i kept the sword some-what similar to the original. I put his logo on the left side of his armor and his sword. He is a mix between sci-fi/fantasy.
Feels good to be done. Have Fun everyone.

Rock Lords! Powerful Living Rocks!

For the contest I choose to redesign Boulder of the Rock Lords. The Rock Lords were present in the ill fated Go-Bots movie and due to the lack of excitement surrounding transforming a robot into a rock they never got a spinoff. Anywho...

Ulysses 31

Oh dear - not enough time spent on this one - or perhaps too much. I went and left out the best part of the show: the somewhat frightening (when you're a nipper) dead people who just floated around in the ship. Oh well, I'll have to revisit this one some other time, but I think that I have painted this one to death.
Photoshop - goodness knows how many hours.

Thanks CA.org for letting us goof around like this - it's fun looking at what everyone else has come up with. Keep them coming.

Davi ok'ed this clash of the titans: Skeletor vs. Shredder vs. Mumm-Ra! I'm pretty pleased with it...The main crit I seem to be getting is that the characters seemed posed; however, I found it difficult to balance a realistic battle scenario while showcasing the redesign of all 3 characters. Oh well, I'm sick of looking at it at this point, but I really hope you all like it! Good luck everyone and great jobs so far!

Sick 'Em Boy"

I finally got some free time today to start up the Space Ghost crew. Here are the first three in the line-up; Blip, Jace, and Jan. I wanted to modernize the characters, while not pulling them completely out of the past.

Almost done with the Space Ghost line-up. Alot of people have been wanting to see my take on Space Ghost. It's amazing how many people know of that cartoon. I guess I should have figured since it's an all time classic. It's defintely still one of my favorite shows. Who catches it on the Boomerang channel? If you aren't familiar with the Boomerang channel it's the 2nd channel for Cartoon Network. I suggest you try to get it. They play all the old classic Hanna Barbera cartoons... and more! Sundays are the best to watch it.

Who knows.... villains may be next? hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Hope ya'll digs!

Ooops...
Didn't have time to finish my he-man painting and to clean up the he-man concept art. So I'll just post the unfinished he-man paitning and a drawing of him along with the skeletor stuff

After the Apocolypse the few surviving form the kingdom of Eternia. But a warlord from the past makes a deal with Satan to return from death and conquer and rule Eternia in his name. The angel, Zoar, who is the protector of Eternia then creates He-Man. A warrior strong enough to defend Eternia. And so the battle between Good and Evil continues even after the Apocolypse...

Because of this stupid school it doesnt look like that I will have the time to do a second character, so I post it now before I forgot it and in the case of having time to do a second one I will edit him into this post.

Because I thougt it would be cool to redesign Skeletor I choose him, hopping nobody else would came up with this idea (eahm....)

I think everybody knows him and Refpics have already postet but here is a ref pic:
http://www.jesse-blue.de/grafiken/ca.../skeletor2.jpg

And here is my skelet0r:

The main change I did was to leave out this comic look and make him look more realist and believabla, cause I think this would also make him more evil than a guy with a violett cloak. Also I showed some of his flesh, because I thougt it looks strange that I only in his face has no skin and muscle.

Velma,Shaggy,Scooby

I was planning on doing the whole Scooby Doo gang, but ended up with just Velma, Shaggy, and the dog.

The original Scooby Doo desperately needed some ethnic diversity, so Velma became Asian. Turtleneck sweaters are so out, school girl uniforms are in! With Shaggy I went for a more youthful look and gave him some gear to help see all those ghosts he is always afraid of, and of course the snacks too!

Was a lot of fun doing this.

I was a big He-Man fan when I was 8, I even named my dog Cringer. The obvious choice happens to be this version of battlecat. (Cringer turned into battlecat for those unfortunate few who never watched He-Man)

I did The Inhumanoids. A little known cartoon in the late eighties that only had 13 episodes. The toys were damn cool though. I hope I can still update this (I'd really like to at least get the earthcore guys in there), but I don't know if I'll have the time. Our WPE was this week, so we've been scrambling here.

Added Auger (the driller of Earthcore). I remember a cool George Hull piece for Matrix Revolutions, and tried to follow that lighting scheme (since I based most the design off of those APU's from the film ). Didn't have the piece though, so it's sort of hit and miss.

I was picturing the updated cartoon being cg, with a lot of carvern backgrounds (mainly to save on render time), and reused animations (fights and such, but render each week from a different angle ). They'd come across lots of cool stuff (characters, ancient civilizations, etc.) underground.

Here's a link to the original Inhumanoids .

Here's mine:

he-man series > Trap-jaw/kronis redesign

MY TRAP-JAW

originally keldors(skeletor) right hand man kronis rebeled against him after his transformation to skeletor made him unballanced,as a result skeltor banished kronis to the dark side of eternia where he raised and massive army of warlike tribes - he then led his huge horde in an attack on snake mountain to kill his former comander.
skeltor defeated KRONIS' army using his own undead one raised from the scorched earth around his stronghold - in the centre of the battle kronis attempted to strangle skeletor but skeletor blasted him off using his new found evil magic powers, in the process destoying kronis' arm and jaw and nearly killing him.
impressed by his former ally's impressive yet failed attempt to overthrow him - he gave the ragged body to his henchman TRI-CLOPS - a techno genius to fix him as he saw fit - the result - TRAP-JAW

this took 2 weeks heavy work - i joined concept art just to do this competition -
my thinking behind my changes were:
-retain the original elements colour scheme and idea of the character.
-the weight of the arm would make the legs and spine useless - so loose em
-dump helmet and replace skull mostly with metal to take strain
-retain a look of loss and sadness in face -
-get the tones of green face and blue skin of original to look plausible through caustic burns etc
-make it look heavy rough and brutal - a real brutish job -
-put eferences to the work done by tri-clops into it (groin plate+spanner)

anyway thats it
hope you like folks - i really really loved doing this - sketches and side elevs are in "finally finished " under max's machines :-)

Dominion Tank Police rework

Hi-Res Here...

Here's my stab at a rework...wanted to make it a bit more gritty...Bring it up to date a bit. Why the odd colour scheme? Well...I had it in greens but it just seemed a bit obvious. I liked it, but I just wanted something different. I don't think it loses anything. But here is the untinted version. The tint was a last minute adjustment. Tell me what you think eh...Oh and if you want to see the progression, go to my daily sketchbook...tons of tanks drawn to get me here..Hope you like it..

Here's some of the Ref for the image.

Thundercats Redesign : Cheetara

Hello everyone. the Images are looking great! Competition's stiff, lemme tell ya...

I was trying to keep with the spirit of the original design, keeping her feminin, but making her more deadly and sexy. I wanted a sleek, fast look, practical costume and more gear, but still the original weaponry as well. I plan to do the rest of the team as well, in the same spirit, meaner, deadlier, faster and more modern.

ah, and for clarification, the dark stripes on her torso are tattoos, not tiger markings, and the shoulder holster holds clawstyle ninja star type things, not a gun. I wanted to stay away from projectile weaponry, too damn easy.

Without further preamble heres my offering, its fairly straightforward...

the original reference material:

and my final piece:

Head shot details:

Regardless of the outcome, im very proud of this piece, mainly for finishing it, AND on schedule! Its the first really finished illustration ive done in longer than i can count, so im happy either way. Thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions...

Luck to you all, and may the best drawer win!

The Herculoids

Herculoids- A show from the late sixties that got resurrected in the *eighties for a brief period of time (*contest loophole). In retrospect it was kind of lame, but man I loved it. Anyhow, the premise was simple. The Heculoids spent every episode defending their pristine planet (Quasar) from pillaging space aliens. SOOOO, lets say eventually they were over run by another race. And that alien race were humans from earth. And the humans infected the planet with their greed for convenience and consumption. Now the Herculoids travel their wretched planet as rebel outcasts trying to regain their rightful place as the guardian of Quarsar, one Saturday morning ass kicking at a time. OK so maybe it’s kind of a crappy storyline, but think of all the advertising dollars from clever product placement.
Zandor (leader)- figure I’d give him an eye patch. Might lead to some dumb backstory on how he lost it.
Tara (Zandor’s chic)- despite fighting human greed and distorted values, she believes she has a weight problem.
Darno (son)- lured away and worked as a burger monkey for a while before joining the team again. Catchy battle cry…”you want fries with that.”
Zok - used to be cool flying dragon thing, now travels through the polluted sewage systems
Igoo -cool stone ape. Didn’t want to mess with him too much. He was always my fav.
Gloop & gleep- On the other hand I never like these two. So I combined them. Gloop the larger exterior being and gleep the internal thinking entity.
Trundro- was this sort of rhino, armadillo rock firing creature. Thought I’d change him in to a late model Ford Bronco. With a mounted 50 cal. of course.

killer stuff here as always

peace

Space Pirate Captain Harlock

Im redesigning Space Pirate Captain Harlock (also known as Albator). Afaik at least the movie "Arcadia of my youth" was a late 80s production. Originally he is a craetion of Leiji (Reiji) Matsumoto.
I got attached to the character in Galaxy Express 999 and also of course in Arcadia.
Important equipment are the sword, the pistol and of course the spaceship.

Further info: http://www.mit.edu:8001/afs/athena.m...ock.html#intro

Fantastic stuff people. Its an honour the be in a competition with so many fine artists.

EDIT: progressimage

Space Ghost

I have a progression thread that also contains the whole back-story to this redesigned team.

Just for clarity, Space Ghost is an actual ghost swirling around inside a clear container that is dispersed throughout the suit and connected with hoses.

sooo. i also did masters of the universe: skeletor.

after keldor was defeated by general randor and been expelled to the hemisphere of shadows, he invested all his energy to discover a way to improve his might. during his studies he found ancient notes on the power of voodoo and the evil spirit baka.
after he had progressed far in the way of voodoo and managed to summon and command hordes of undeads, he was no longer known as keldor... all referred to him as skeletor from now on.

for skeletor and his evil hordes time has come to wreak havoc, and destroy the masters of the universe...

you all did an amazing job. cant wait to see all entries.

Saber Rider (unfinished)

Absolutely wonderful work so far, can't await the next competition

I went with Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs and reconcepted a whole new crew. I did some sketches for new characters and their backgrounds, but due to my broken scanner I can only showcase one of the characters, I have done digitally.

About 4 h in open canvas 2.

old close-up of the head without mask
UPDATE just quickly redid the head. didn't like the original version anymore. new one can be found HERE

And just in case, anyone cares: HERE is a thread, where I'll be posting some more progress on this topic. I'll finish this

This is Saber. In the original series, all the characters somehow seemed to me like imperialistic fucks with their military armor and Colt as Wild-West Cowboy-Char. So I decided, my newly concepted heroes would be the complete opposite. Saber is now a native american with a badass weapon.
new logo as well, but its kinda too simple
I was hoping to do get my redesign of Ramrod finished as well, but I got no time left today I hope you like it, C&C are appreciated.

Galaxy Rangers

I chose to do new versions of the galaxy rangers. Pics of the chars are above each remake. I decided to stick to a limited amount of detail and sort of cater towards easy to animate cells. Oh and btw....Cheeks pics OWN!

ok so this is my entry for the TD
Thundar the Barbarian
My idea wa to portrait the caracters as
fir they were form diferent cultures so
Okkla is form africa (warrior costume)
Ariel is form India (Indian tunic)
Thundar is form mesoamerica (mayan war suit)
and Gemini is form europe (medieval armor)

The second desings were my first idea
in wich I just to maintenined the barbarian
look, in those I just tried to modernise the look;
but I ended up likeing the diferent
"cultures" aproach so I maked the final
action painting useing the mayan and
medieval versions of the caracters thundar
and Gemini.

This was real fun, the action paiting tooked
two days to be done and I only have slept
about five hours (time to sleep )

Original desings: http://www.thundarr.com/images.html

I guess I, like Marko, was not feeling the body builder style of Skeletor... I wanted more of a demon/banshee look. What can I say, they're a phuked up couple...

I got GTA - San Andreas this friday. It kind of ate up all the time i had put away for the thunderdome. The whole thing is a bit rushed, espescially the background, but hey, atleast i finished SOMETHING!

When i choose to redesign a turtle, i asked myself what i could add to make it cooler. A skull is cool, and fit on anything. I also decided to give him katanas instead of the straight ninja-tos I remember him using. Oh, and I gave him a spikey shell.

All over i aimed for a more sneaky, viscious and dark Leonardo. Did I pull it off? I dont know...

If the image appears too bright or too dark, and/or is too green/blue, please let me know. I believe my monitor have taken a few hits, the brightness is fucked up, and everything glows red.

Panthro the rogue mercenary

Well, it was really fun working on this. I originally had planned to do the whole crew but, it was a bit too optimistic of a project for me right now. So what if the Thundercats were rogue mercenaries?
This was all done in Pilot easy touch pen. No pencils used.
