Character of the Week #328
Guardian of the Crystal
Deadline - Sunday, June 16 10PM GMT
At the center of the Earth, it is believed that only molten stone exists. However, there are people who have traveled to the center and returned to tell the tale of what they saw, only to be shrugged off by scientists and theorists. What truly lies down there is some sort of being, dressed in elegant clothing, standing watch of an enormous crystal. The crystal pulsates as if it is the heart beat of the planet. Some people say they saw this being attached to the crystal, others say it was just standing there next to it. The crystal's color that these people have seen was always different. Perhaps what they see is a reflection of their being, like a metaphor. The one consistent thing is that the guardian is of flesh with smaller crystals growing from it.
This week, we want you to design the guardian and the crystal he/she is watching over. Think about the use of color and what it means.
- Can be male or female.
- Crystals MUST be growing from the guardian.
- Research what colors represent, and reflect that into the design and attitude or the guardian.(EX: Red could mean anger, so if the crystal is red, then have the guardian appear angry.)
- NO NUDES!
- Finals must be posted in the finals thread before the deadline
- Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
- At least 3/4 of the character must be visible
- Sketches or rushed artwork will not be accepted into the poll
- No photograph paint overs, must be 100% original work
- At least two wips posted with your final in the finals thread
- Background is optional
- Have fun!

A quick announcement!
1.) The previous topic will remain open for a few more days. In the mean time, please submit your finals in the appropriate thread!
2.) We are going to run THIS topic and possibly future topics for 2 weeks until we know for certain that the forums will remain up and running.
3.) We are removing the Focus Challenge because no one is taking advantage of going out of their comfort zone with it. It takes us extra time to come up with the challenges and if no one is doing them then there is no point. HOWEVER....We will be adding additional smaller requirements into each brief. Nothing big, but something to push you guys a little more than normal. We feel this will be a good balance. So PLEASE be sure to read all the requirements in the guidelines.
Thank you everyone and we hope that you all continue to participate in spite of recent issues.
Just wanted to quickly say that I thought a lot of people were doing the focus challenges, I know especially with the Artemis one a lot of people went with the suggestion for the colour scheme, it would be a shame to see them go. However I guess it is down to participants to come up with their own focus challenges depending on what they feel they need to achieve.
My Sketchbook Please take a look, I value all feedback and there may be virtual cookies in it for you.

Yes, some people were partaking in the focus challenge, but your example of the Artemis challenge isn't strong enough for us to consider keeping it because there were only 7 entries for finals, which I found very disappointing considering the number of WIPS there were.
Don't worry though, this also gives us Mods a little more freedom to really make the briefs a bit more descriptive, so in essence we are basically just combining the focus challenge into better briefs.
Time to warm up the tablet!
Here is my first WIP. Finished my composition and have moved onto line work...
Started on this yesterday; went for purple, because I never, ever use purple. Its associations are mainly royalty and spirituality, so I tried for elements of both (implied crown and lots of gold, sort of a monkish vibe rather than armour and the like.)
There's an accidental but pretty clear WoW-ish vibe going on here. All that time parked on the Exodar has bled into my subconscious. =\
Spent about 30 on this yesterday, not sure if I'll continue in this direction or not.
I might have to re do this one. Going towards creature more than character. Thought I'd show it anyway.
Please stop by my sketchbook!
nice updates so far liking the designs so far
first wip variant, haven't added crystals on body on this yet, goin with red'sh hue for danger, apprehension
umm.. not sure if this is more of a render a thing thing, but I came up with this concept..
Been working on this for the last couple nights, here's what I got so far. Black Crystal Guardian.
nice all >D digging them black crystals quinn
Did a quick thing, If nothing else I needs loads of practice drawing more people.
Nearly finished, until I can think of something else to add. Added more yellow to the green.
some pretty good entries so far too. I particularly like the black crystal dude by Quinn, very reminiscent of Brom, which is cool.

This is one of mine sketch, not so sure about the color… But quite convinced about the Character.
now my Achilles heel ... the composition.
For now mine favorite is the one from Quinn Simoes
redesign on second wip variant...
@fireblade the overall mood and lighting looks great, only crit is to work on the forms a bit more like where the robe flows/drapes over the leg, it's looking a bit flat, granted you don't want detail everywhere but some of the forms could be defined a bit more. Also if the right hand is on the same plane as the foreground (left hand) lighting should capture the same amount on both, kind of looks like it's receding a bit the right hand with the dark shadow compared to the left hand when grabbing the staff (unless the staff is bent), overall I like the character has good design and mood >D
@Saraiva: Yes, you are waist deep into the creature zone with that. Think humanoid.
@Lakka: What you have so far is NOT a character. This is for developing fleshed out character designs so that we can see what you come up with. I suggest you start over, really read the rules, and follow the guidelines for this.
@DeaDer: That is falling awfully close to Illidan from World of Warcraft. Be careful with this one, I suggest that you go and make some thumbnails first.
great enteries so far guys .... this is my entry
