I would like you to CnC my painting. It's my first attempt to try and paint a mountain from my head without any reference. I am quite bad at painting the enviorment. Any way i can improve it beside practice, since i am doing alot of that? Should i do some rock, mountain, tree and that kind of stuff study to improve myself?
Can i ask why you are trying to paint mountains without reference because by your own admission you said youre quite poor at environments. To me theres no reason why you shouldnt look at reference to notice things you wouldnt normally notice because atm your mountain still looks pretty uniform so it can be hard to make sense of the forms. Did a quick google of moutains http://www.photoeverywhere.co.uk/wes...untain5689.jpg you can see in the photo you get this rocky, dot like texture where the snow drops off and shows more of the rock under it. Also theres a slight value shift where the moutains overlap cause one is slightly further away so you get atmospheric fog. I think just little things like that can help push this a bit more
Google images of more mountains, really analyse how they look how the forms turn etc. As for the actual painting side of it, your value range isnt that great which can make it look rather flat. Also im not certain on this but i think typically shadows are slightly lighter than the object itself, in yours its hard to distinguish where the horizon is - where the mountain meets the water. As for the water, i doubt its pure white in value if you look at a photo, so take it down a notch. Think about where you want them to look or lead the eye too hence i tried to hint at a path or something.
