Teen Challenge 171: Wurm
This week's topic is Wurm. A wurm is a giant creature reminiscent of a worm or a snake. They are enormous and very, very dangerous.
Wurms come in different sizes, shapes and colours.
Magic: The Gathering has a great collection of different wurms that you can use for inspiration.
Other examples of Wurmlike creatures are the Midgard Serpent and the Sandworms from Dune.
This weeks focus is composition. What's a wurm if it looks like a worm?
The deadline is Sunday 15th of July, 23:59 GMT
Finals thread can be found here.
This is what I have so far, my wurm's inspired by the zerg from starcraft.
First time entering one of these.
First thing I thought of was the Zerg as well; particularly the Nydus Worm.
I always imagine them bursting out of the ground and towering into the air above you, before coming down on top of you with jaws open, swallowing you whole and disappearing beneath the earth again in one fell swoop.
First WIP (Rough pen sketch)
Hey guys this is my first time participating in a challenge as well. Hope this isn't too "much"
I had some free time today and the ideas were flowing.
I hope I'm not violating any etiquette here with this kind of thing as in showing too much or what not. like i said, i'm New.
Here is my first one it is a plant based Wurm with grass and fauna all over it. Kind of inspired by Marlboro from FF series and it's teeth are also black.
this next one is way different form the others. its supposed to be much smaller than the others and it is not built for a lot of underground activity.
It would be an evil creature of the "black" kind of thing. maybe a human face or whatnot. Looks like that Miyazaki thing lol.
This next one is basically my main idea pretty much probably going to go with this...
I decided to do a Sky Wurm
I too got the idea from Starcraft, mainly the Mutalisk ...looking at it now they look way too similar I'm going change this a lot over the week.
It is meant to be a cloud dwelling worm with a slightly pink fleshy and light body. It is the opposite of dense except at the mouth. I got the idea for the "beak spine mouth" from a variety of things. Since it is in the sky I want to incorporate avian creatures so there in comes the beak... and I wanted to contrast all the pink soft flesh around it. It would be made of the same material as the human fingernail.
I like the idea of little black beady eyes on a contrasting pale white skin surface so I tried that too. I think its like that cute/creepy thing you see sometimes like Daryl from Hellboy...
Also I want the "beak spine mouth" to be holding the Wurm together and I got the idea for the ribcage it forms when.... well... when you see a turd in a shrimp... i liked that grotesque vainy look. I definitely want to incorporate that image.
Above you can see the mouth is agape like a sea bass, because since it is a gentle fleshy sky wurm it will be relatively benign by nature. The mouth I REALLY want to incorperate is that of a BASKING SHARK's
this is PERFECT, even the attitude of the animal... just imagine this but wurm-like and hovering in the sky.
Above you can see I also had an idea for a variation on the sky Wurm... maybe a female of the same race or w/e ... these are extremely immature ideas I came up with this earlier today so hopefully by the 15th I'll have something solid.
I like the wider head because it makes it look actually aerodynamic like a Wurm Stealth Bomber or something.
My 2nd to last variation is the MOLE Wurm:
Its basically a ground wurm with Mole features. I gave it a Star nose thats pink and fleshy and only exposed when out of the ground.
My last idea was something like an armored wurm... maybe man made or idk... something holy like a summon from Final Fantasy.
Yes I realize I uploaded all of these using Photobucket I assure you my final and official WIPs will be by CA manager.
also i never delete my PBs.
All of these are ideas a I may pursue for the final entry. If anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it and just let me know what you think.
@scrt_AgentMan - I like the teeth and the purple colors. the mood/atmosphere fits the wurm!
@TheSkunk - Nice idea! make sure you spice up the wurm's bursting out. Like with dirt and motion.
@Nyctalgia - Thanks SO much fro posting this so fast, I was aching for some artistic direction.
EDIT 6/10/12: WIP from today, trying to focus on composition, thought I'd have some birds or "air-krill" (like a blue whale eating) in the foreground, but blurred out or something... but idk how to use filters that well.
again this is a Sky-Wurm idea, just replace ground and dirt with clouds. Will this idea pass under the topic given? Or does it not meet like..what the examples are?
should i do a more conventional wurm?
this from later today
Man could really use some help... any input at all. I'm having trouble keeping the pale white skin next to clouds... I know this can be executed, but idk how well i can pull off a white beast in white clouds. maybe slight shadows ..or textural differences. maybe i should go a different route.
Howww is my composition???? i tried to make the image larger but my laptop can't handle it... this is like a bit less than 25% zoom.
I put the obligatory flock of birds -_- for comparison to the size of the wurm. thus helping the comp? x.X
also i will change a lot of this. my actual .Psd doesnt have a lot of this. this was just quick editing because my actual .psd since it was so large, was lagging.
I want the "birds" to be a hovering... organic fleshy things also... maybe a planet with a different atmosphere and a lot less gravity would yield creatures like this.
also for scale and comp I want to put little pre teen soldiers hanging off the horns like Jack Sparrow on a ship's mast.
the concept or story would be that:
"...The "sky-wurm" creature is a rarity and even rarer to find, would be other beings taming/co-existing with the creature. however people with such fortune are in jubilation, for they are offered wonders by the creature... amazing sights and views that no other may see in a 1,000 lifetimes... transportation, adventure and exploration of the heavens is a gift offered by the gentle leviathan... blah blah blah..."
heh, yeah, something like that. been reading a lot of Dark Tower xD
- not sure if this is my WIP i'll take further (hte last one above) here are heads in the same position.
its 12:22am 6/12/12 - may have butchered my other WIP probably going to revert tommorow.. but this WIP here:
was part of the process.. :/ tried multi-color eye balls on the chin..

I don't think I'll have time to get a finished entry what with my other work needing done, but as this is my last chance to enter TC, it's worth a go. Did some doodling, some thumbnails and head designs. Think I might go with the second thumbnail, I like the armoured head look.
Wow, everybody's ideas are pretty good D:
This will be my first time trying out in this, so I hope I might be able to get an entry in time...
Below is my entry so far... I kind of based the face off of a moray eel... for not much reason ._. But it's supposed to be underwater, coming out of it's cave. I haven't really decided if I want it next to a coral reef (the squiggles on the bottom right), or in the deep sea (which I think could be cool as well)
Thoughts, opinions? (yeah I know it's messy, but I wasn't sure if I should continue with the idea or not ><)
Here is another WIP - Haven't worked on it since the first WIP until today.
Coloured up my entry a bit...
Still kind of unsure about it though :/
Looks good to me lauren! Make sure the "Sea Creature" aspect doesn't overwhelm the "Wurm" aspect.
As far as the rest of the image, are you going to try and capture the depth of the sea (ie how far down the bottom is from where he is) or the surface, high above, with the light shining in? Or both? I think it would make for a very interesting overall image composition to have his head turning down toward the deep depth where you have those colorful lights, while have the surface light lighting up his back -- and try and make that contrast as strong as possible.
Would be nice to have some water effects and bubbles to show the movement of the Wurm. (Though I'm sure you'll add things like that later on the image)
Overall, though, it looks to be shaping up better then mine! =]
Here is another WIP of mine. Unfortunately, this is close to as good as its going to get (and its not even as good as some other peoples early versions o_o) so if you have any suggestions or tips before I finish it off, they'd be much appreciated!
(Still have to work on some details, the sky, shadows, etc)
I don't know how much more you want to work on this but I made this paint over to maybe help you. Right now your image lacks depth so everything looks flat. (Watch Feng Zhu's first video of his design lab series) As you continue working on your art, keeping value seperation in mind will help a lot. Here is another WIP of mine. Thanks for the tips, AgentMan. I would like to work on it a lot more, but I won't be able to before the deadline - Saturday\Sunday are going to be busy for me.
Here is the final version: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...17#post3502517
I tried to keep in mind your advice when making my final adjustments, but I don't have time to work on it enough to reflect your advice very well. I'll keep it in mind for future works, though - thanks!
Well I didn't finish this one in time. Oh well..
If anyone has a word of advice, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Here are my sketches
Derp... I left my tablet at home, so I won't be able to finish it on time ><
Oh well, I'll probably finish it anyway (just because XD)
