here i made a sketch of some forest knight, wonder if hes just hanging out, guarding the path into it, or the way out! is he a ghost?
but I didn't like it too much, a bit too cartoony and the viewing angle wasn't so nice, I wanted something more moody, and I realize (after some thought) that the most important aspect as far as scenic atmosphere is concerned is those big, basic planes. How do they change as they go across, how does the light act and change on them? I always heard big shapes was the key, but thinking about planes is what helps me, we are 3d creatures so maybe 2d isn't such a great way to think.
some other sort of warrior, I imagine he would jump out and say
"Your goose is cooked good sir!"
and then set to killing...
another knight, I had a different picture in mind when I started, so would've been worth it to do some thumbs, just to understand the big forms, the background isn't interesting enough either
a little speedpaint for today, really been trying to get the basic forms and their surfaces right with the light and textures, need to learn more about light and form urrrgh
today I finished an asian sort of interior I was working on. With these things you can separate the planes on layers to work the lighting but I need to figure out a more economical way to do it, maybe only the strongly separated planes at first- needed to sketch more really, to get loose and really figure out the basic forms and view of the image, and that surface movement
your brushstrokes are very strong.I want to see more sketch.
Mokhi-thanks for the suggestion! Sometimes I'll waste a bit of time with textures, and usually its cause I know I want something on the surface but haven't really decided exactly what-then the licking commences arrgh!

I painted a horsey, its unfortunately pointing the same direction as the last one,like an echo lol...
ok, a few speedpaints-no drawrings cuz i gotta cleen them up (scanner broke so i take pictures)
threw an old acrylic on top of some digital slop and got this-
just tryin to keep the form simple and let the light be all mysterious-
another horsey picture- the castle wall bugs me, should've experimented with it, things get boring if you play it safe!
been playing with new brushes, trying to get some good brushes for broad effect-all I really do is take a normal brush, stamp it, then make a pattern out of it, then make a block of the pattern into a big brush
pretty fun just playing with black and white, just smearing around the shapes with the smudge tool
then I wasted a bunch of time on this one-I really want to get good at doing architectural stuff, I suck at sketchup so it'l take time. Also Just knowing how light acts on the materials-some outdoors landscape painting will help nicely I think... Gotta understand the surface planes, not just the edges like with line!
I really like your brush strokes and looseness.
I would say that there is a difference between painterly and poor brush-economy. Even with loose styles you always want the brush marks to contribute something to the form or space you are trying to convey.
I think you are heading in a great directions and i can see alot of similarities that indicate you are heading in the same direction as people like Whit Brachna, Craig Mullins, and Sparth...

Been thinking about brushtroke econ, I guess all it is is how many strokes you get something to read in-kindof like gas milage. But good simplification only really comes when the form is heavily internalized that you know its planes in a conscious way. Also having each stroke perform a different function or show a different aspect- lots of times I just want to paint a form as a solid shape or draw a line around it, but with lots of the masters I see how they can indicate edges and surfaces in very subtle, almost indirect ways. Must come from lots of life painting, because thats mostly how things appear to us in life...i need to do alot more of that!

for the carrier I did some designs, I want to get better at this sort of thing-really have to buckle down and work on drawing-lots of perspective and thought on structure. I want to get good at drawing! Shapes and form design, hmm...
seen your stuff at sijun, you're improving rapidly! My advice is to think of your brush-strokes more.. and try to use larger brushes for your shapes, otherwise it gets really messy and it will be harder to define the form etc. Think smaller brushstrokes&elements the closer to your focal point you are. Think *less* and not *must paint mooooorrre!* when you run into a problem where you're trying to define a form etc. Will be following this book ..
thanks inzai! its always nice to see a sijuner here. You are dead on in your advice, its something I've known in words for a long time, but in practice its something that needs to really be gone over to internalize. Especially the times where I become distracted or unfocused, but I'm trying to remedy that! I've been thinking about this and I believe that focusing on plane design is really key, I started doing studies in black and white posterpaint, trying to draw with planes like ol' Sargent was all about- big plane big plane big plane, then connect those with shapes/planes, and keep placing/connecting. I think this is a beautiful way to find the form and design of shapes...I'll post those studies next time,I'm thinking different about painting now
this picture I was trying to design well in shape and in form, used the afore mentioned method to resolve things and even though the painting aint so great I'm very excited to explore this direction (its fun)

lemur really dig them updates, actually i was trying to replicate your soft touch in that lighting u capture but was an utter fail hehe! luv the lighting on that knight sketch, keep up the goodness!

krato- I agree, and have been thinking about that, I think I might be over texturing, or texturing before the flat planes really make sense- and not working the silhouette the right way... More and more thought needs to go into this and I think it comes down to "need more life drawing/painting"
snootchy- I'm honored! The knight was originally in color, but it was awful! I was practicing trying to selectively visualize things. As in visualizing the thing in line to understand form, then visualizing grayscale to see the values etc.. etc..-it does work, but I had this horrible mess in the color department. The thing was really midtonal and the colors i started with were red and green, so mud was made and temperatures did not make sense. I visualized it for the values and saw it needed brighter values on the armor, thats how the light got that way.
a couple to add, the first I kindof planned out and ended up doing an acrylic based on a digi sketch, then PSing on the acrylic. The lighting is awful-I had no reference and no life experience with light like that. I realize what I should have done was make it daylight, have the smoke not internally lit so it could be modeled, then the rocket boost be bright but not a major light source...ah, it always takes a failure to realize what you really want-gotta get failing!
the second is my vacuum sketched from my laptop, I want to do alot of this, where you observe but also use the imagination somehow. I used to copy the shapes as well as I could, but I believe if you change it up while observing you gain illustrative strength.
