A quick character sketch. I would normally call it finished at this stage but I want to push this one further and don't know how.
Either that or I'll use it as a sketch for a more complex piece - I'm not very good at that, I usually abandon sketches and never take them it further because I don't know WHAT to take further.
She's called Kara. The daughter of an infamous witch, she's trying to break away from her mother's shadow. A young woman with a lot of potential, she's eager to prove herself and a little sadistic.
I would really appreciate any advice on how to finish/improve this!
I was thinking about detailing the outfit more but I'm unsure of how to do so effectively without taking attention away from the face.
I’d soften up some of the edges, and give her some form shadows. I’ve done a bit of a paintover to illustrate. I wouldn't worry about detailing the outfit if the face is what you're wanting to focus on. Simply show the effects of the light, and you're good to go.
Maybe the contrast on my monitor is too high but I don't think it needs to be darker. Looks pretty finished to me. Only thing I see really is her right eye seems a bit too far displaced and her nose could use just a little adjustment. Are the whites of her eyes supposed to be green?
I think the eyes are a bit off in placement. I don't think I fixed it in the paintover but just some idea of where it could be.
Her hair seems too big for her head, and the shading on her breast looks a bit weird since it's so much redder than the rest of the skin. It also looks like only that breast has a push-up bra. Still, it's a nice portrait.
Ok thanks guys!
I've made a few small changes and I think I'm happy with it.
I moved her right eye (it definitely needed it), added some 'push' to her left breast, adjusted her nose a little, oh and gave her an ear... and I feel like it's much better so thanks so much for all your advice.
I do agree with Blankstate that it doesn't need to be darker. I experimented adding shadows but they just didn't look right with the red secondary light source.
The whites of her eyes are supposed to be darker than if she were human and that's why they're green I thought they would pick up on the background and all that.
arenhaus, I'm not sure what you mean or how to fix it
Still, I think I'll call this one finished, unless I look at it in the morning and realize I must have been drunk when I was painting tonight.
Hey, this isn't perfect, but it might help a bit.
Edit: Just noticed her boobs are off-centre too. Draw a line from where her clavicles meet and you'll notice they're way off - it becomes more apparent in my redline, where you can see the neck more clearly. So, that's another thing to think about.

Thanks Kveldvaahiim that helped loads!
I've redone the shoulder and neck area, moved the boobage, a few other little things and I'm happier. I agree the hair is very big on her head but it's supposed to be big and fluffy. I've taken some away on her right so it looks less like a helmet, but I would prefer to leave it big and just assume she's done a LOT of backcombing.
I seem to have a habit of making hair way too big though and it's something I need to work on.
I think I'm ready to leave this and go onto the next one.
Thanks so much again everyone.
