THanks Johann for the crit. Your colors are looking great!
@JanJager:Loving it! Great design and mood.
@Pixeltuner:The colors are awesome. Glad you chose that one.
So some colors.
2nd round of coloring. Starting to get there, still need to add some more enchantress accessories and foliage shadow but there's still time to get there.
@Johann de Venecia - Beautiful line work, reminds me of watercolor and ink paintings. The arms could move if there was extensions at the elbows cuffs, so I'll believe its functional
@Rhdnor - like the time period for the enchantress, the top hat's a plus.
@M.D. Stranger. - Cyborg enchantress, I like it. The guardian's right arm is in his chest, I would say just slid it over a bit and your good.
@JanJager - Beautiful girl, like the shadows with the bangs. I like how the arms are encircling with an inanimate protection. and you kept the runes woot!
@Trolljack - love the magic power currents, thinking of something similar trailing, I would go with the spiky red hair, more street urchin vibe.
So many diverse entries, amazing work all.
Abrazuno : i like the dragon guardian you've got there, it might be cool to show some gears or pistons maybe up in the shoulder socket or something to make it a bit more clear that he is actually mechanical and not just a metallic dragon.
continue : i'm loving those boxing gloves on your robot!
Whiskey Sour : looking pretty neat so far, but keep in mind that both the robot and the girl are supposed to be neutral, right now he's lookin' pretty sinister.
marko markovic : watch the balance on the character illustration she looks a bit lopsided atm, try some horizontal flips to check. your main illustration is shaping up to be pretty cool, some atmospheric fog to push back and simplify the back legs on the guardian will help to create depth and also give you more control of the focus.
Trolljack : that jacket she's got is really cool, she looks a bit young atm if you're shooting for her to be 16ish. can't wait to see what you come up with for the guardian!
Grumbleputty : if you're worried about him not seeming mechanical enough you can always add in some more mechanical elements, something like a waterwheel in place of his head could be neat and would go along with the water theme you've got going. also check he balance, his pose seems a bit off.
Pixeltuner : looking great as always keep it up!
panb : thats a cool idea, the graffiti covered look of the robot is great, almost like someone animated some playground equipment or something. i'd love to see it pushed further!
JanJager : man that is just... freakin' awesome! nice work!
i finally found some more time to work on this...
some refinement on the Aoife concept, i think i'm gonna go with #1 maybe add in some of the pouches from #2.
also some roughs for the mechanical guardian, this one's kinda messin' with my brain, try as i might i just can't get Dog from HL2 out of my head. still really up in the air on the guardian so if anyone has any feedback i'd appreciate it.

@Abrazuno: I like the picture a lot. It has very nice energies. I think Maybe introducing different shades in the color of the dragon would help? It would help it graphically I think.
@Dranyer: I Like #3 on the character design. It's very unique.
And I think #2 and #3 are the strongest in the mechine. #3's helmet thingie is very cool. Awesome technique BTW.
And here's another sketch
Continue: I really love the robot's upper half receding into the shadows, however her nose and lips are a tad cartoony-shiny (plus the face shape is a little grown up) but assuming they're not done yet. Otherwise the hint of the connection between them is shown very subtly, very nice.
hey everyone. cant resist a 'mechanical guardian' themed doodle off!
Update: basic lighting.
Update: some progress, improved the wishy washy lighting, that's all for today...

Incinerated: It might be a bit too old. Just tweak her face a bit to make her look younger.
Here's an update on number 3.
@ Grumbleputty - hydraulics can be considered mechanical, so just stick a few pumps and valves on the guy and you're good to go
@ Dranyer - I think guardian number two looks like the best fit in terms of style. It matches the design theme you have for Aoife most closely.
@ Incinerated - I like the mechanical penguin idea. It's very unique.
My Sketchbook - All are welcome
I'm sure this is way too late for a critique, but it never hurts.
To be honest, she definitely looks too adult. Her appearance also does not reflect a type of "innocence" that a girl of neutrality would have in the world described in the brief. What you have going on here is, "hey boys, I'm here for the taking, come get me," type of girl with very revealing clothing to match. I would re-think her design and gesture as well. I'm not trying to be mean but, I don't think a pinup style doing the can-can works with this one. Try thinking about the type of world she exists in, the environment, perhaps why that is the type of robot it is, and examine the brief thoroughly to get a solid character idea.
I like the robot, it looks pretty cool. I would also think about the robot's functionality. It needs to be able to protect the girl.
Good luck, I hope this was useful some how.
@Pixel, the concept number 3 is looking quite impresive, number 2 is good too, though the inclined horizon line is a little too much exagerated imo.
If you don´t mind an opinion about #3, i think you could fill better the space by having her closer to the right margin. Right now you have all the important content to the left, and nothing on the right. Another option could be to crop the right part and give some room to the robot on the left. Either way imo could end up in a better and more justified composition. And the water is looking too bright imo, having some dark reflections can help to frame her, and frame the picture overall. One of my favourites so far!
@ Incinerated, i like the drawing but is hard to associate it with the brief.
@continue, the bot design is very appealing, the girl´s face looks very adult to me.
@Dranyer, i like # 1 of the Aoifes, and all the robots.
@Abrazuno, imo not showing the eyes in not a good idea. I guess you are trying to accent her neutrality, but she is looking very unhuman and more like a soul in pain. Also, imo you need to push the contrast and depth a lot further, don´t be afraid of almost whites and almost blacks here and there.
good lucks everyone..

Pixeltuner that pic is pretty awesome, the number 3 one
marko markovic A bit flat you need more value diversity in your pic
Okay made her younger. I still need to explain the penguin tho, add some stuff and more...

Looking awesome Pixeltuner - amazing how you can just get so much so quickly!
Dranyer - your thumbnails look very promising! I really like robot number 2 . Him and 3 look like the 'toughest' - but number 4 does look really cute :p!
WIP for mine. I always find everything looks so much darker when it's not in Photoshop .
Please drop by my sketchbook and help me improve!
So many awesome stuff here, I couldn't resist coming up with something!
So at first I planned to make Aoife like 8 years old and the guardian to have a kind of mother-like feeling. But I think I m going with the first image and a teen Aoife kinda rebellious and weathered from the assassination attempts and whatnot, with a more masculine mech.
Loads of great stuff here.
My wip, maybe I will be able to finish it in time.
MartinC: Loving that design of the girl in the top-right thumb. Hope you manage to finish.
Some great entries this week, looking forward to seeing the finals.
Had very little free time this week between work and been doing EoW too so sort of knew I wouldn't get anywhere with this before the deadline. Thought I might as well post this sketch with some notes all the same..
Gonna gradually paint in the robot during my free time after work during this week. Not sure what I'll do about the BG yet.
Third round of coloring, need to clean it up and balance some of the levels but I need to finish those character sheets so I'll be working on those this week. Gonna show some of the inner workings of the guardian to reveal its more "mechanical" nature
Aoife is about 14 or 15, at the cusp of the primal doorstep to adulthood of 16 when she will face a trial of Consciousness. Till that day she wanders a deserted isle of the coast of Ireland blindfolded and guarded by the mechanical beast Sianach. The machine was created by the Old Council who saw fit to remove the enchantress from the influence of society. If the beasts third eye detects an intruder than he will siphon some of the enchantress's innate power to transform the victim into some part of nature, hence the tree frozen in the face of shock on the left.
I'll post the critiques later,
Getting a bit of a late start on this one...
Here's some feedback, although to be honest, there's such fantastic work up here that I'm doubtful I'll be able to contribute anything useful!
Mitze: I really, really like your take on Aoife. You gave her an institutionalized look and made her pretty androgynous, which opened a lot of imaginative doors for me in terms of her backstory. Her expression seems to me like she's a bored student, and I really think you took a relatively cliche topic (little girl and Mecha) and came up with a really interesting concept. Great job!
Marko Markovic: The detail on your robot is really incredible, and I am really impressed with the costume design for Aoife.
Pixeltuner: I'm a super fan of your stuff, and this piece is just as beautiful as the work I've seen you do. My favorite is definitely the last drawing you posted. Excellent detail on your robot, the grates/windows really intrigue me. I wish I could see more of Aoife, but I believe you'll probably show more detail as you go along.
Incinerated: Fun peng-bot! I don't think Aoife looks too old; when I first read the topic, I thought she might be a teenager, and your Aoife looks like she's really anxious to grow up and into her growing body. It works!
Rhdnor: Great composition! I have to say I like the one on top with more of the black outlining a bit better than the latter on the bottom. I think the color scheme of mauve/violet looks better against the gold. The purple shading looks really nice against the metal of the guardian, as well.
Dranyer: Wow! Aoife number 3 is really cool! I love the different hands representing good and evil...the evil hand is really lovely. You've done a really great job illustrating the idea of a girl born of both good and evil parts. Well done on the staff, too! The structure is really original.
Abrazuno: Your Aoife is really lovely, and she's floating really nicely. I might fix the feet, however--they look a little swollen on the tops.

I started off with cute girl/robot sketches but changed direction for something a little darker. I originally thought a game of chess might be fun. I hope I have enough time to finish this one since it's a great theme but it's a busy week so this might be as far as I get.
So many fantastic concepts so far. I've enjoyed looking through this thread and seeing what everyone has come up with.
dont know if i can make it, but been working in a crazy strange cube/square sci fi mecha idea, that can reform to various modes to protect her...so here it goes
