Who sketches when they travel? (big DL)

Traveling anywhere, even to the most commonplace destination makes me want to draw. I love to draw on planes and in airports. Something about enforced idleness. But the main-event is getting to some exotic location, and absorbing the culture like a sponge. Sure, take pictures - but if you want to be able to draw from the imagination - actual field drawing is much better than taking pics. You remember what you draw - and you can invent from your memories when you get home. It's also a great way to meet people when traveling - (all you young un-attached concept art studs take note

Anyway - here's a pile of drawings from a trip to china a few years ago....

these awsome. looks like you really covered quite a few places. I don't think those places are all that close to each other. though my geography is really bad. and haven't been back to china since 92...

lol - ya, long trip - HK to Bejing to Xian, to Dali to Yangsho - got lucky - my wife was there on a schollarship, so we could stay quite a while. Also did Thailand that trip - some awesome stuff to draw there, but that's another post...

Really nice! This reminds me taking my sketchbook uot more often and not always refine everything out. You gave me some ideas I will try out!

Wonderful work, love the sketchy stylishness. Obviously, you're a talented artist, and it shows. And, not to seem like a complete newbie, I'm curious what watercolors you use for these? Probably some easy to take places set, and I'm interested on the brand and/or set you use (never hurts to try new mediums). Thanks, and I'm also enjoying the more complete sets of travel sketchs on your site.

Jet/Silver - ya I use 0.5 markers, a sakura brush marker that totally rocks - (fiberglass tip keeps it's point and shape, and fountain pen style refills means no dipping in an ink bottle) and then i go over the drawing with any old watercolors.... I have a bunch of random tubes from college up to present day, mostly winsor newton - and I just fill up the little resivoirs in a pocket sized folding tin palette....oh, and a hip flask for clean water.....I used to think a lot about the materials, but now the main deal for me is taking what fits in a little shoulder bag - otherwise I'm tempted to leave drawing material behind....

Anyone else got travel sketching they want to post???

I absolutely love that loose line rythm in every piece. bravo.

I can see you really enjoyed making these. It seems you're very liberated. I'm not detecting any struggle you may have had trying to copy reality. You translate what you see directly by drawing it as you feel it. At least, that's what i think looking at these.

you rock...i wish i sketched more when i traveled, but then, i don't travel as much as i'd like...

these are inspiring...i may have to travel soon (other than biz trips) to get to draw!

the freedom and economy of line is something I just have not got a good handle on...i'd love to, but i don't.

*envy*
