I've been getting into concept art for about 2-3 years now and i recently got a laptop, graphic tablet and painter 12. im really into apocalyptic style of games and artwork and also modern day stuff like GTA or battlefield.
my question is that I've seen speed paintings and tutorials and such on youtube and i see that some have it where they start off by making little thumbnail silhouette and i was wondering if anyone can knows any tutorials online or can guide me or giving me tips to create these like the best why to approach them to start because when i try to do it myself it doesn't come out right.
The thumbnails that i want to create are character and creature thumbnails, mostly character so that i can pick one and start rendering it. The software that i use is Painter 12
With thumbnails, the goal is to make sure that your concept is readable when it is a silhouette. The idea that you can't hide things with details when its completey black aids in helping understand if your concept makes sense, especially to others who look at your work. Sometimes if I already have a general idea of how I want my creature or character to look, I'll throw down a silhouette of the basic forms. If something looks strange, I change it. Other times if I'm brainstorming, I'll throw down a bunch of random silhouettes and then build my design as it appears to my eye. Check out Paul Richard's article at the following link. Very usefull information there. Hope this helps in some way!
