posting here a new step by step tutorial that i've just posted on my site yesterday. as usual, in my spare time, i'll try to add comments to the images.
it's 100 percent photoshop.
the editor had asked me if i could possibly make a single cover that would have been cut in half in the middle of the image afterwards. so that the left part of the illustration would be found on book01, and right part on book02.
quite challenging, because of the fact both books had the editor's logo in the lover right. so it was a nono putting anything important in this area.
the original concept must have taken less that two hours. but the details afterwards must have taken at least 10 hours divided into two sessions.
hope you'll like what you'll see.
Sparth- That's soo awesome, can you talk about your process a little bit. Do you work from reference at all?? Thanks for posting this.
Beautiful man. Its always great to see a tutorial from such talent. I love seeing how these pictures come together step by step. Thanks for posting!
ooooh . . . I am eagerly waiting for your comments.
nice tutorial...did you have an idea already, or was this straight from blue sky?
great tut. awesome work
i can see how you changed the view of the scene from step 3 to 4 on the left hand side to a more distant shot. Also liked how you applied more background colour to the right side of the pic for the buildings to look more distant than the foreground. Its nice to see it start off in monochrome then apply colour, do you often do this?
I'm sure I saw this a week or two back.. where did I see it? Its got me wondering now!

WOW!!!..this is just....WOW!!
love this ...coulours are so good....and the larger peices of structural design are just so cool! (ive got a bit of a 'thing' for large structures with minimal, yet destinctive detail)
ive been trying to do stuff like this but keep failing....probably time to buy that graphics tablet ive been wanting for years...
see..if i could do stuff like this then my sci-fi concept thingie would be moving along a super-sonic speeds, instead of just plodding along as it is.....
btw. any recomendations for an entry-level graphics tablet? (cheap as poss...i'm currently 'between jobs')

Wow. Thanks for posting this! I have a question, if I'm reading this right you start in gray then make a color layer over it? Then paint over that in more solid colors?
Are you using a Tablet PC, or a Intuos? Cintiq ?Just wondering which I should get =P
Beautiful btw, My question about your changing the greyscale to colour.. Was that you going over it on a different layer, or was that you adding Lightness, and changing the hue or something tricky like that ? Tell mee... TELL MEeeee! " Zim "
