excellent studies!! the civardi books is one of the more difficult to learn anatomy because of his hatching style and the book as instruction goes into little detail on the basic structures or how to begin, but the drawings in the book are very detailed and good for reference for sure.

I suggest you check out bridgman and loomis, they are a great help.

I friggin love your thread. The progress is great to see. There's a lot of hard work here and it shows. You also avoid neglecting various mediums. There's not too many threads here that really jump around mediums/techniques so much like that. And, it's a good thing. I helps reinforce those skills that aren't tied to specific tricks with one medium.

Also, there's something.. messy about some of your sketchy sketches that reminds me of my own sketchy sketches. I think there's a tendency to use too much pressure on the early/construction lines than one needs to. Start light and get the forms down first.

On the other hand, this totally doesn't apply to your more careful pencil work. It's incredible, and I love that last set of studies and the one on the 21st. Impressive, like so many of your other works.

I'm looking forward to watching the thread.

-Craig

btw I can't figure out the medium on this one (here) It looks like it's on sketch paper but it looks so much like a digital work. what medium is this. it looks too smooth to be on paper

Craig Houghton - Thanks soo much for the kind words and for reminding me that using different mediums is of great importance to me... have not done so lately. Also thanks for the tip about starting light I will definitely put this into practise, how true it is. The referenced drawing was a pencil sketch scanned in and then coloured in PS. Once again thanks for the comments it really is a great help.

Here's a bargue (portrait) I did a while ago - charcoal.

wow, your drawings from reference really made a jump for the better, since the beginning of this thread !

I also think you should check out Loomis if you're interested in drawing without reference, he's got great explanations & excercises in the books ... I really like his approach ! You can download them on saveloomis.org

Keep it up !!

Endregan and Nightvision - Thanks guys. I do have loomis and I realise how good he is (I have done some random stuff of his) but I started Civardi and I can't go back now.

NYWK - No pleasure without pain.

Here's a couple of unfinished dsgs I was too embarassed to post. But I will put em in my sketchbook so I can look back and see how shit I was way back when...

My goodness. you have so much depth in your work. the shading and light is excelent, practically perfect. that's somethin I need to work on a lot, depth. I would like to see more detail though. You got the form down though. Keep it up dude~~~Sio

Very nice stuff man. About the "too much time not enough reward" thing. Trust me your reward is coming Just enjoy what you are doing, work hard, and don't give up. Thats the key.

I am reminded a lot of Wayne Theibaud (sp?) in a lot of your work. Really expressive lines and vibrant colors.

your head studies were great, however your no ref stuff still doesn't have the same depth as your ref, i think its in your eyes...they don't seem to be realistic enough, try thinking of the shading you have in your paintings (your paintings are freakin sweet).

but damn do your paintings rock....i could look at those all day

Nice stuff

Nice studies. Have you ever seen Burne Hogartth's stuff. You can probably learn a lot from him too.

Keep it coming. Show more of your own stuff. I would like to see what you can come up with on your own.

deez - thanks for noticing. Funnily enough I have worked a lot more on painting from life but not since my teens have I done much from my imagination. That is since I joined CA. With these latest set of reviews I am going to do nothing but my own shit for the next 6 months I wanna conquer this no ref stuff. Will probably still go to life drawing classes tho cause I went to a few (about 10) a coupla years back and regret not keeping going.

Glikster - Thanks for the compliment. The only advice I can give about ref work is keep on doiing it. Blind contour drawing is really what started me on my merry way.

metroeast - I have heard about Hogarth, I'll get to him for sure at the moment I am into Loomis. In regards to working on my own shit I am seriously onto it from today .

Really appreciate the feedback

your studies and such has payed off. In your life drawings I can see a lot of classical approaches in pure linework, they dont have you rendering yet which is cool, i wouldnt bother with it yet.

keep goin

Here's what I bin up to since last post. Besides my Thunderdome piece

First up my 10min sketchies of me sista and brudder in law

No ref feline suppose its a lion

life drawings

This is a still life (oil) I liked but messed up (a bit). Sorry for the blurry pic.

This is a simultaneous left (blue) and right (carbon) handed drawing it turned out pretty cool imo may do some more of these.

This is the complete composition of a few still lifes off which I have posted my favs already

This is my latest still life in oils from my nieces Sunny and Melodies duck toy. Quite like this oen

This is a very old absract landscape I did before I knew f@#$ all. I still dig it today though.

And now for the CA. I really like two of these as they show that my efforts are paying off. I really had no idea about illustration and concept art a year and 3/4 ago till I began lurkin and then joinen CA. I drew a lot back then (not as much as now). I liked drawing from life and F%^&en with the oils and PS . I always wanted to be a complete artist and am so glad CA has pushd me into learning the craft. I am 32 and just about to take some art classes for the first time in my life and the results I now am getting are sooooo much better thanks to the community and help I receive here. CHEERS.

Oh and last up a SP about 15min I spose. Not great as I stuffed up the ear and too messy (I have been known as Mr. Messy)

Hurricane - An honor to have you comment bro

I see plenty of promise and evidence of enthusiasm here, but as you asked for a crit I'm going to suggest that you do a bit more study on EYES. I'm sure you've done some work on them already, but eyes are so important that you can't afford to do them even just moderately well; as Robert Henri says, they MUST be wonderfully done.

At the moment the eyes are problematic in quite a few of your drawings from life, and in many are a bit big, especially in the whites, giving them an open, staring look. Also, many have the look of those flat, almond-shaped designs that everyone draws until they learn to think three-dimensionally, that is, constructionally, about eyes. It is very interesting, but not really surprising, that your drawings from 2D reference are mostly much better in these regards.

There are three basic skills, or sets of skills, that you will need to develop:

1. Learn to see the eyes as a flat shape. That is, learn to switch off the circuits in your brain that interpret what you see as a three-dimensional eye, so that you can see and record objectively the actual 2D shape that is presented to you.

2. Learn to construct an eye from any angle, so that you can EXPLAIN your accurately observed 2D shape by lightly drawing in the construction. You will find a short but useful treatment of the construction of the eye in the Loomis books Figure Drawing For All Its Worth and Heads and Hands.

3. Learn to then draw the eye over the foundation of steps 1 and 2, using contours and shading to bring out its three-dimensional character. Study master drawings from a wide range of periods and countries to see different ways in which this can be done.

It is probably a bit unconventional to suggest that you concentrate on eyes when there are some other more fundamental things that logically should come first. Because of the magnetic attraction of eyes as indicators of emotion, people tend to draw in eyes much too early, when really it would be far better to construct the whole head solidly first, preparing a place for the eyes so that the latter can be dropped in, as Sargent said, "like a poached egg on a plate". But the three steps I have set out are the key to drawing anything well from life, and if you "get it" drawing a detail such as eyes, you will soon extend that understanding to the whole head and the whole figure.
