Help with WIP
So basically I'm stuck as too what i do next...
I know the grey-scale colours arn't perfect atm (also LF tips on this)
Any tips/knowledge on where I go next or how best to implement colour with this img would be great, thanks...
P.S. he will have fireball in his right hand (I.e. the light-source)

Generally speaking it's a good idea to place all your values down, rather than separating character/background/foreground. All the separation achieves is forcing you to keep those elements in mind rather than looking at and comparing them directly to see how the relate, which makes the whole thing far more difficult than it needs to be. Go ahead and fill in the background, add the fireball, work the scene as a whole. I wouldn't worry about color for now, think of it as icing on the cake. Correct values that make the image 'read' are the main course.

Update: Any tips appreciated...
Iv started on a background just to give it more 'perspective' - if that's the right word. I'v put it on a red background for here as the character is what I'm looking for advice with.

You might want to put a less saturated background in. The thing with painting on white canvas is that white is a very strong value and it's hard to see other values correctly against it. Now all this saturated red does pretty much the same thing, it kinda blinds you. Or at least it does blind me. So: put a light midtone grey background and work from there.
As for the character himself, he has a really thin waist, I have no idea what's going on with his right (the bent one) knee, and the anatomy is basically all over the place. Also, if the fireball is going to be your main light source, the brightest one, then the straight leg wouldn't receive that much light. Especially the thigh looks like it's lit from the front and above, and not from the side.
How to fix all that? Gather reference and use it.
