So I made this environment sketch of rocks pointing into the sky, but I'm stuck somehow like in many similar sketches. My problem is that I don't now how to refine the rocks, so that they still pop from the rocks being farther away. Do I pick the grey from the next 'layer' or the layey after the next? Or just harsh rim lighting?
Additionaly, as I want to color the sketch I fail at painting the right colors to maintain a nice mood. Do I make those rocks brownish, greenish? Or should I just throw in a fill-in layer with a tone which suits my purpose?

if you hadnīt mentioned it, that that are mountains, I wouldnīt have recognised it.
You only used one brush and some greytones. There is nothing special happening here.
Look for some environment paintings before you start drawing.
If you want go on painting, the mountain range in the middle in the background are too high!!!!
yeah, check out some reference photos. I live in China, so I know the style you're trying. do a quick google search on "chinese mountain painting" and you'll find some goodies. Try a hard brush at first to get the initial shapes and lines in, block in the values, with the most contrast being in the front - not the darkest all over, just most the differences in tone - so the brightest brights and the darkest darks on the foremost mountains. the further back, the more atmopshere and less contrast and details. Chinese mountains like the "karst" hills of Avatar are all fairly uniform in height from a distance, so the peaks should just fill in the gaps behind one another. Once you've blocked in the initial values, go at it with a nice, fat, smear brush, and get some smooth faces. Then go back in with a hard brush and clean up the edges. keep watching the ref photos to see how rocks react to light, and to find a color palette. Chinese style is very watery and looks like finger painting at times, so a huge smear brush might get that effect, but i don't know - never tried it before. Finally, get a texture brush going - for my mountains i'll create an animated brush using 6-10 textures taken from inverted threshold shots of real rock faces, then use those to add some real flavor to the foremost mountains. hope this helps! good luck
i like the feel you are going for, and you are executing the idea quite well. When you are developing an "alien" landscape i wouldnt worry about "this is too high" Whats to say that mt in the back isnt supposed to be that much larger. At this stage you have a lot of wiggle room to decide that. One thing that would help you get the right texture and look is a hard flat brush with opacity set to pen pressure. I also enjoy using the wet edges setting when sketching environments especially mountains. Of course reference will be your best friend, but brushwork should be your wife.

Here's an updated version. Tried to render the rocks out with some reference. No textures and smudge brushes until now.
Somehow the lower right corner looks much better compared to the rest
higher contrast in the foreground and make it darker. The composition needs a lot of work. There is nothing interesting to see. That mountain in the distance in the center, I would make like a cool skull entrance or something to make it interesting.
